900rr not charging, new battery, motor knock too
ok, so my 900rr isn't charging. I'm having a problem with the motor knocking too, starts knocking right at 3500 rpms, sounds like cam chain but i'm not sure. It's a rebuilt motor so i'm afraid it might be the rods. Can a cam chain that's loose be really loud?
now back to the charging, i put a new battery in it. It'll start and run, but then dies and kills the battery completely, i tried driving it around 3-4k rpms to see if that charged it up but it kept killing the battery.
how do i check what is wrong, either the stator or rectifier. those 3 wires coming from the stator, what voltage should be coming from them and what do i check or where else do i check to see which part is smoked? thanks

I think your regulator rectifier took a dump. I have one for a 954, but dont know if theyre the same. they are always goin bad on cbr 900s. but if want it ill send it to ya- 75 bucks.
as far as your motor knocking. youre screwed, especially since its already been rebuilt once. start lookin for a new motor, cuz yours is on its way out.

14.4 volts dc at the battery, 65volts ac or more at the stator (yellow) wires. Check the voltage with the connector unplugged...the meter leads should be between two yellow wires at a time. Also check the rectifier plug...they melt. Good luck.

By chance is it a 93-95 engine? Cuz their garbage the 900 I got for my g/f was doing the same thing after only 2 months of being stunted. Got a 99 engine and problem solved.

Re: 900rr not charging, new battery, motor knock too
ya, it's a 94 motor. i haven't done anything to it. it's a fresh rebuild and it hasn't done anything but go up the road no more than 4500rpms. It had plenty of oil too. Would the valves really make that much noise? it's a pretty loud noise that starts about 3500 rpms, up til then there is no noise at all.
and the voltage thing, i think i foudn the problem. The plug was cut off and the guy custom wired this **** together, it was smoking and the wires were melting when i started it today, i think that means the rectifier took a ****.

another guy at sportbikes.net had a loud knocking noise, he said it sounded like the motor was blown, he replaced the cam chain tensioner and it fixed it.....so hopefully that will work for me.
