smoothing out and slowing down 12's

Scraped my first sitdown this weekend but they're still real choppy. I know it's because I'm not staying on the gas and just working the brake but is there any easy way to get this down? I was doing them in 1st, I'm -1/+12 maybe 2nd gear instead?
