I got an 01 and I just went -1 and +2 in rear. I ride highway a lot so I like this setup a lot. I'm not a serious stunter I like to hit the twisties also so that's another reason I only went with the setup but I like it.

yah -1 +3 w/ 520 chain is probably good all around......
if your more learning towards the stunting side but wanna still go freeeway , my friend runs +9 rear and still is fine on the freeway.....

Alright guys, any gear ratio can work great. Just use the clutch. Doesn't matter if you are stock or -2 +20. I have stock gears on an old 600, and it's good for everything except real slow stuff, highchairs, and 3rd gear wheelies. I don't know of any beginers doing that stuff, so stock gears would work great for any beginer on most every bike. No need for a beginer to waste the money for gears.
