900RR Problem (Rectifier?)

Ok heres the deal I just bought this 900RR stunter and am in the processes of fixing it up. I took it out of the garage today started it up and was letting it sit and warm up. About 5 minutes in I notice som smoke and go check it out and the rectifier is smoking. WTF?? It started up and ran for a few minutes before I bought it and nothing like that happened. What do you guys think and have you had any rectifier/regulator problems?

Re: 900RR Problem (Rectifier?)

I've had a problem with those on my F2 & my 900RR.
Make sure the harness is not all burnt up and the wires going to the harness arn't melted together. Mine were all stuck together, so I fixed all the wiring and heatshrinked each wire...Haven't had a problem since...Well, I did have to put on a new regulator.

When you get a new one, get one that has heat sinks on it to keep it running cool.

Alot Of Times The Honda Plugs Get Hot And Melt. Not A Big Deal Fix The Wires And Replace The Rectafier. Check The Stator And Make Sure That The Roater And Stator Are Not Out Of Round And Touching From A Prev. Wreck.

Re: 900RR Problem (Rectifier?)

Sweet sounds like everyone has had the same problem, the wires going into the rectifier were definitely melted together, I pulled them apart and taped them up before I started it up, but they were pretty chawed so it'd probably be best to rewire the whole thing. My guess is the damage was done when the previous owner had it and the rectifier just finally gave out when I got it.

Listen...
Go to the parts store and get some heatshrink! Make sure all the wires are butt connected REAL good, or better yet, solder them together and heatshrink all of the wires seperate. Don't use electrical tape, it doesn't withstand the heat from the wires and will cause them to melt together again.

Good Luck and like I said earlier, get a regulator with the heat sinks built into it.

Re: 900RR Problem (Rectifier?)

Yeah, I didn't do that with the wiring it was like that when I got it. All I did was separate the burnt wires and tape them up to keep them from shorting. Where can I get a cheap rectifier any ideas???

Re: 900RR Problem (Rectifier?)

I got one for like a 100 bucks brand new. Use the heatshrink. And if you take the plug off and hard wire them make sure you know where the wires plug into. the bottom 3 dont matter the but the top 2 have to be right

Re: 900RR Problem (Rectifier?)

If Sillyg can get you a new one with the heat sinks for $100, that would probably be your best bet. I didn't wanna wait to order one online, so I paid $140 from a local shop.

Ok, the next question is which bike's rectifiers will interchange with the 900RR's??

I know that 94 F2 & 95+ F3's all use the same as the 900RR.
I think the newer RR's use a different one.
Let me tell you that it's hard to find a used one...If you do, you can't really tell if it's good or not. There are a few places around here that sold used one's for like $75-$80! *** THAT! You can get new one's for $100 or if your inpatient like me, you'll pay $140 to get it right away.

After you redo the wiring, snap a pick..I wanna see how it looks.

Re: 900RR Problem (Rectifier?)

Will do, I'm off to buy heatshrink and some solder as soon as I post this. One more thing, why would those wires have melted number one and number two why would the regualtor have friend anyway? Is there something shorted out somewhere or something that's going to cause it to happen again or what? I'll post up a pic later for inspection. Glad its winter cause I don't have $100-$140 to throw at this thing right now.

Common problem with the Honda's. Motors are STRONG, but the electrical systems pretty much suck!
If you wanna honda, you have to put up with this type of ****....

Re: 900RR Problem (Rectifier?)

Sweet, that was the answer I was hoping for, that means it's not likely it was something I did to it. lol Just got home with the solder and heatshrink trying to get the motivation to go fix it.

ok, soldered and heatshrunk all those wires. Now I just need the new rectifier and it should be good to go. I hope.

DITTO A buddy of mine had the exact same problem on his Bike and I can tell you what the cause was on his, and Most likely was on your bike, the rectifier was going out so it wasnt fully chargin his Battery so he just kept putting it on a charger, ride, charge, ride, charge, ride, after so much charging and leavin it on the charger over night a bunch of times it messed things up i guess, then he Finally put a new battery in it and BAM next day same **** happend while warmin up in his driveway

Re: 900RR Problem (Rectifier?)

**** dude that's probably what happened. When I bought it he said the battery wouldn't hold charge and it needed a new one. Had to jump it so I could hear it run before I bought it. I put a new battery in it right before I took it out to warm it up.
