New gears

I wanna change the gears in my 97 YZF 1000R. I want to do wheelies. I think I got stock now. What should I get?

Usually -1+2 is a good all around setup.

Start off with something simple. Like -2 +10 That would probably do good wheelies.

I run -1 +2 on my gsxr 1000. I think it is a good overall set up. It Does a mean wheelie and is still fast enough to get the hell out, when a brotha has to. I have had it -3 +2 and it wasn't any fun because it would top out at around 120. I also live at 6500 feet so I don't have near the power that you guys do. The trick is to not gear it so crazy and really just try to practice a lot with a reasonable gearing. You can help your cause with lighter wheels (magnesium, Carbon fiber), Brake rotors and 520 the chain over. Also removing the pair valve on the gsxr helps a lot. All of this will help the engine rev up quicker so you can get right to your balance point and make your bike easier to control. I have Dymag Carbon Fiber one piece wheels and Galfer rotors and have a 520 chain on there and I couldn't think of gearing it any more extreme than where I have it (-1 +2) at this altitude. I can't keep the front down. It is laughable

nessssssssssss

JPratt can only hope to improve
I wanna go, -1 and either +4 or +5. What size chain will I have to use?

Im not worried about top speed at all, had my first and last high speed highway scenerio just last weekend. Never planned on going that fast. And now I know I never will again. But I still will drive on the highway, so I dont wanna top out at like 85 or 90 mph

One thing that speed **** helped me realize, is that if you go that fast. You shouldnt be afraid to attempt damn near any stunt out there. That shizzle is just insane.

I would keep practicing with stock gears. I've got a YZF 750 and went -2 in front. Now that I know how to do wheelies I wish I hadn't dropped the 2 teeth. Doing 2nd gear wheelies the thing tops out like its in first. Stick with the stock gearing until you're ready for the slow stuff.
