Bike Overheated, need some help ('99 F4)
Well I was out at this stunt spot last night , practicing flamingos, and wheelies, when i later noticed the Coolant reservoir filling, after that It wouldn't start up, tried to start it today, didn't work. No noise, nothing. I'm fairly new to working on bikes, so any help would be greatly appreciated. (Don't mean to be a squid : ( ) Coolant reservoir is empty now, and bike still makes no noise. any help would be greatly appreciated

does it turn over?
if it doesnt by starter motor chuck it in gear and try roll it, if it doesnt roll you have ceized your engine.
you can try fix this by putting some (a cap) of oil into each cylinder and leatting it sit for a while, every so often come out and put it in gear and rock it back and forth and if your lucky after a while you may free it up
if it does turn over (or after you free it up) but doesnt start run a compression test on each of the cylinders to see if you have lost compression on any of them, this will mean you have blown a head gasket and possibly warped your head. not as bad as it sounds unless you also cracked the head which will mean you need a new one

Well, I just went out there, put it in gear, it can move back and forth about 2 inches, as it always has, and when i pull in the clutch it rolls too. When i turn the key to ignition, no noise what so ever, nothing, when i push starter button, no response at all Thanks again though for your help : )

Re: Bike Overheated, need some help ('99 F4)
take out the plugs and see if you can roll it in gear, your trying to see if you have seized your engine. if you cant turn it over with no comp then you have, im used to dealing with smaller capacity engines i just remembered we are talking bout a high comp 600cc.. you wont turn that over with compression
if it is seized then apply a cap of oil to each cylinder and leave it for about an hour (rock it round to spread the oil around the piston) then come out and try to no compression roll it in gear, rock it back and forth for a few minutes and if no luck leave it another hour for the oil to do its thing
repeat untill you have a engine again
after you have it rolling add another cap of oil to each and roll it round for a while
after that slap in the plugs and try turn it over and if your lucky it will run fine, if your unlucky it will run like a POS and that will mean that its got a blown gasket

Re: Bike Overheated, need some help ('99 F4)
I actually think it may be a fuse thing, cause i heard a little "pop" sound a little while back when it didnt want to start, so I'll check that too, thanks!

Yeah, so I changed out the three broken ignition fuses, and the bike still wont make any noise : ( what to do now? where are the other fuses located if any?

Re: Bike Overheated, need some help ('99 F4)
have you tried checking if its seized?
when you turn it on do you get lights on the dash??
when you hit the start button does it click at all or just silence, if no click at all its still electrical, if its got a click then nothing then its trying to turn it over but engine wont rotate (seized?)
theres usually only one place on a bike that holds the fuses

Re: Bike Overheated, need some help ('99 F4)
Well, I do not normally run gauges since it is a parking lot bike for me, so I just connected the gauges, and no lights after i turned the key. Now to answer your other question, when i turn the key and push the button, it is dead silent, NO click what so ever. I am thinking it could maybe be the battery???

Re: Bike Overheated, need some help ('99 F4)
if the fuses have been replaced and you don't get lights or a click of any kind while going through the starting procedure then its probably battery, either switch it or if you haven't got another one chuck jumper leads on and see if it works

Re: Bike Overheated, need some help ('99 F4)
you can either jump start the bike or bump start it and see if it starts... just make sure the key and switch are on, and use 2nd gear if you bump it.

Re: Bike Overheated, need some help ('99 F4)
So yeah, I jump started, it got up and running, once i disconnected the jumper cables, the bike made a very funny noise and bogged out, it sounded lie it was drowning lol, so im guessing i need a new battery, because this one is not holding a charge, even after i let the bike alternate for a bit. Im gonna go get a new battery tommorow i think. Thanks for your guys help

lol a seized motor isn't the death of a motor, its just a fair bit of work to un-seize but most of the time you can get it spinning again
if your bike stops after overheating then the usual culprits are:
Blown head gasket
Blown head (warped, cracked)
Seized motor
you got real lucky that it was fuses and a battery cause all the above either cost money or time or both

a seized motor on a high performance machine is almost certianly death...now when your talking about lawn mower engines or your bullet proof CRF50 yeah its possible to lock those up and get them unstuck.
