Check all your connections first if they are all tight and corrosion free it is a stator or reg/rect. Waste money and guess which one you have a 50/50 shot or buy a manual and ohmeter and check to be sure.

No buy an aftermarket repair manual from Clymer. It is less than half the cost of an OEM manual, a little less detailed but is more than good enough. Check them with an Ohmeter just like manual tells you and replace the faulty one. The Rec. is easy unplug old plug in new, the stator you have to remove the leftside engine cover and remove the old one. They are easy to check though you could even check the stator for continuity between the three wires of the same color if you dont have continuity between all three it is bad. If you do have cont. then you need to compare what values you are getting with th manual. Keep in mind that they will not be exact because temeratur has a big effect on it but should be close to the specs.
