Ticking 636 '04 valves?

My 636 is starting to tick a little bit, mostly at idle, then it seems to quiet the higher i get in the rpms.. It has about 4k miles on it. Do i need to do valve adjustments on it periodically? Anyone done this on theirs? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I am a computer guy and not 100% on the mechanics.. I just like to hop on it and ride. Yes i have changed the oil on schedule..lol

its your cam chain tensioner...every 636 ive seen does it...reset yours or get a manual adjusting cam chain tensioner.

Re: Ticking 636 '04 valves?

some of the kaw valves need adjusted soon. they should be ok for 17k miles like the manual says, but my 05 was out of spec at 2k miles. I guess it's a quirk on some kaw 636's...all years. seen it so far in a handful of them.

Turn the bike on, put it in 6th gear, shut it off and roll the bike in reverse with it in gear. (Manually adjusts you Cam Chain Tensioner)

yes that really does work, but I wouldnt recommend doing it alot of times. That should just be a temporary fix...

hmm...guess our kawasaki manuals leave out that. must be a super good tip since kawasaki even leaves it out.

i wouldn't do anything with rolling the motor backwards in gear. takes maybe an hour total with removing plastics and stuff to check the valves, if one is out then fix it, but it never hurts to check them, it only hurts when a valve breaks off and locks the motor up when you are in a high chair.

Every Kaw I ever had ticked...then again, so did all the Fords.

My '91 had roughly 70K...ticked like a James Bond movie, and the valves never moved...checked them every 10K or so.

And Alvin, I will try that trick next time I am on it...never believed the dealers anyway!!
