I dunno about you all, but I love my heavy damper for circles, just for the fact that when it comes down the bars dont tweak out of control and spur the throttle.
the other question is that theres different seals that are made for different types of fluids, ie- a seal made for trans fluid will swell if you put brake fluid on it, and vice versa. Time will tell if the seals hold up chemically

a heavy damper is prolly the best stunt mod Ive done.. Im real REAL happy with it..
the thing i like the most about a heavy damper is the confidence it gives you when your practicing circles, you know its gonna come down nice and sweet

Re: poor mans damper
I'll be getting a stock damper for free today or tomorrow. I couldn't figure out how i would mount it until I saw the picture of your setup. That mount is a very good idea, but i think i have an idea for an improoved mount. I'm going to mount the piston to the bottom of the piece that you mounted it to so that it will be about an inch lower (this will involve welding a little plate to the bottom of clamp to make it flat). Then i will bolt a small piece of flat stock to the tank to bridge the gap where the ram air duct goes in. I will then mount the body of the damper to that piece. Because of the direction of the forces, this setup can be made much lighter and still be rigid.
