f4i idling high n low

i got a 02 f4i

if i set the idle at lets say 2500 rpms

and kick the bike in 1st gear

and ingage the clutch, the bike will stay at 2500 rpms for lets say 10seconds

then drop down to 400 rpms almost dying out then boost back up to 2500 rpms

stay there for 10 seconds and drop down and so on.

any advise would be appriciated. thanks!

Re: f4i idling high n low

Sounds similar to my problem. I checked everything I could and changed it all. Cant figure it out. Does it do it while in neutral and in gear or only in gear??

I feel ya, to the 3rd degree. I've been down from the stunt bike for 3 weeks now. If it does it in neutral you can take everything off (airbox) and watch your throttle bodies to see what their doing. Also check your spark plugs to if your rich or lean.

Re: f4i idling high n low

Check your map sensor its screwed in to the left bottom front of your air box, my bike was giving me hell with a f@cked up idle problem bike was bouncing rpm up and down and every time I shut it off I would have to hold the throttle open for a while to have her run right. Make sure that the hose that connects to the map sensor isn’t pinched off at all because if air isn’t passing through to that sensor or its messed up that will affect your idle on my bike my FI light was on because of it but back to the idle problem the map sensor was my fix might be yours. Now if you got a friend with a 929,954 or another F4i the map sensors are the same swap with one of your bro's sensors to check just be sure that you don’t pinch off the line when putting the air box back down.
Good luck and tell us if it was the map sensor

Re: f4i idling high n low

i kinda have the similar thing goin on with my 600rr. Whatever idle i set it at when the bike is in neutral, lets say 3000 RPM, right when i drop it into gear the idle goes up to 3500 RPM and stays there untill i put it back into N. On my bike it seems like it's designed to do this but i dunno why. Mine doesn't surge like it sounds like yours does but i thought maybe that info would be helpful . A vacuum leak does sound like a reasonable cause tho ...

Re: f4i idling high n low

Try the header test and see if your only runnin on 2 cylinders...if so its your fuel pressure regulator.

My bike ran like *** and the idle hopped around and that was the cause.

Re: f4i idling high n low

well i fooled with it today , the map sensor is working . the throttle position sensor is working also. when i disconnect the throttle position sensor it idles fine but when you give it gas it hesitates badly so i disasembled the gas tank and im gonna replace the fuel filter located on the fuel pump there was times i put gas in the rain cause it always rains up in washington and i stunt in the rain =X so ill keep ya guys posted... all vacume lines are running fine and are not pinched. new plugs this problem has been going on since i ran shitty fuel and put fuel in the rain.. so we will see. thx for all the recommendations guys..

Oliver, cleaning throttle bodies on f4is does wonders for some bikes. I know people who have done this and its a different bike. Also, sometimes on hard drops the throttle bodies will get knocked loose, make sure theyre all the way down and on tight

Re: f4i idling high n low

pop them off, then thoroughly go through them with carb or brake cleaner. Its a pain in the a$$, and there are alot of little passages. just stick the little straw in them and go to town. I would wait for some other advise on here before you go through all that. But i just thought of that because you said you put in bad gas. Some times bad gas will gum up the works.

Mine is starting to do this too but not as bad of a drop like urs. When it idles it will jump around and isnt smooth but once you get on the gas its perfectly fine. I have been runnin 87 in it so maybe thats the cause and I need a new fuel filter?
