big sprockets are for going real slow without stalling. if you're not going slow then what's the point? if the gears make it so you can clutch it up in 4th, but you're going same speed and rpm as you would clutch it up in 3rd stock, then what's the point?

personally, I really liked my -2/+6 on my 929. It had a 520 conversion on it with a stock pipe. The stock pipe really takes away from the bottom end on 929's (I don't know if its the same on 954's but I would assume it is) so in order to make up for that you might think about going with bigger sprockets (or if you can get away with it, ride with an aftermarket pipe).
The part that sucks about having stock gearing and going like 10 mph in a wheelie is there is less room for error when controlling the rear brake. By that I mean if you get a little too excited and hit the rear brake just a tad to hard, the bike has a tougher time recovering and can stall out easier.
I personally learned with stock gearing and when I got really really slow I actually found that switching to lower gearing (-2/+6) actually helped me learn to NOT hit the rear brake so hard b/c instead of the bike stalling out I could correct my error and learn to just tap the brake rather than mash it. You can actually hear when you mash the rear brake b/c the RPM's just die VS. stock gearing where the bike just stalls and you can't really learn from your mistake b/c you usually forget how hard or soft you just hit the rear brake to make it stall out.
Thats just my . You do lose quite a bit off the top end, but you can get out of a jam if you need to b/c the bike can still go about 155, the downfall is on the highway the bike sits around 7k at about 75 mph. Good luck with your choice.

Re: gearing sugguestions
well i still run my stock pipe but its shortend becasue when i put on a 12 bar the pipe hit. to me it doesnt feel to suffer to bad but on my old 750 i went up 5 in the rear and that was just way to snappy for first gear but that may also be becasue it was my first bike and i wasnt even able to do high speed wheelies yet.
