f4i steering head bearings (929 front end)

Just curious how many of you that have a F4i with the 929/954 front end are using tapered roller steering head bearings. Mine has the stock ball bearings, but I was considering the tapered rollers- mainly for stoppies. Anyone like 'em better? worse?

I think that may be a characteristic of the 954 either way. My Dad has one, and the first time I rode it I pinned it over a rough section of freeway- that thing shook like a junkie going thru withdrawls.

changing the races are a huge pain in the *** unless you have a press. I'd stick with the ball bearings, change the races in the frame and leave the race on the steering stem alone unless you have a big press.

Hey, I'm tryin' to visit Texas around the end of January, so be ready to ride. Anyway, I don't mind changing races- the trick is to use an air hammer on the lower race (pressed onto the steering stem). I'm a motorcycle stealership mechanic by trade, so I don't mind a little work. I just heard that some people are having good luck with the tapered rollers, so I figured I'd ask around. That f4i is way twitchier than the GSX-R for long stoppies.

How do you torque the bearing adjustment nut without one of those special honda socket tools?

u can buy a spanner wrench or u can hand tighten it then just use a hammer and a flatblade scredriver. and hit it untill its tight.

Re: f4i steering head bearings (929 front end)

The Honda Re-call on the 954 took the tapered bearings out and put the older style ball bearings in. It wasn't a manditory re-call. I put the tapered into my 4Fi with no problems. No press no frezzer was kinda easy.. I must have gotten lucky for a change.

Yeah, the update stated that if you used the bike for racing purposes, the update should be performed to improve handling. Who knows????? I just wanna try 'em for stoppies. If they make the front end even a little more solid, I'll be a happy man. I don't need it to steer quick, I just want it to go straight.

[QUOTE=Schwartz]I'll stick a needle bearing in your eye!!! [/QUOT

I might end up doing it myself if I can't go over 500 feet this upcoming season.
