Exhaust help

:YEAH OK.. i just got my pipe in the mail.. i want to shorten it.. and i know i have to drill the rivets out.. and then take a hacksaw and cut it to the length i want.. the rivet it back together.. Or that is my plan.. but the main question i have.. is.. on my headers.. i don't have gaskets.. could i use a manella folder.. i was told about that by a friend and just thought i would ask.. to see if it would work.. If you see any flaws in my plan to shorten my pipe please tell me.. thanks -rich

Re: Exhaust help

depends on what kind of pipe ... you should be able to drill the rivets out cut it and re-rivet it though like you said ... thats the way to do it ...

uh i'm gonna go with no on using a folder in place of header gaskets ... last i checked folders were a paper substance which cannot resist the heat of headers - which means they'll burn ... header gaskets are crush gaskets - usually rubber just buy new gaskets for the headers...

Re: Exhaust help

it might help to use masking tape on the pipe when you cut it. the tape protects the can from getting scuffed. you can also use the tape to make a perfect line to cut on. i would use a sawsall instead of a hacksaw, you will be there all day with the hacksaw.

Re: Exhaust help

my friend said to dip the menella folder in oil first.. that way it would prevent it from burning.. and it would seal to the headers.. ?!?!? sounded a little ify to me.. but i dunno.. so i should just buy gaskets.. ??

Re: Exhaust help

buy gaskets. you won't be there all day if you use a hacksaw unles you're a little bia bia. we cut mine in like 10 minutes, with a hacksaw. then used sheet metal screws to hold the cap on. it's not pretty but it's a stunt bike so who cares.

Re: Exhaust help

Hacksaw will work fine. Thats how I cut mine down, but it was also Carbon Fiber so it made it easier. Just don't try to cut all the way through b/c the muffler packing will get torn up to Shitt.

Re: Exhaust help

if it's carbon fiber, be careful with the splinters. it's carrcinogenic and that's the fact Jack

Don't sweat the header gaskets as long as there in the head you'll be ok.

Measure how much you want to cut off them take it appart. DO NOT CUT the center pipe when the pipe it together. If you cut 4 inches off the pipe only cut 4 inchs off the center pipe. This will insure that the pipe packing stays inplace. Most people just cut straight threw then the center perferated is WAY short and the packing just blows out.

Make sure the original gaskets are in place. They should be stuck in the head where the header meets the head. For sure make sure there all there, they are an important gasket, however they are very re-usable. They're pretty hard to notice up in the head as the spot where they hang out is recessed a bit. Even when you look right at them it somtimes looks like there is nothing there. Just take a good look you'll see them. Chances are if you took it apart and you didn't see them fall out there are still in place. There pretty thick.

Measure what you want to take off, then take apart the can, then cut the can, then once you have it apart you will see what eles you have to cut. Cut the inner part the same distance you shortened the outter can. The wadding you will need to cut down as well. I haven't really come up with a good way to cut that.

It will be a little difficult to take apart and you should have the same problem getting it back together. It's not that hard just have pattents and it should go good.

Re: Exhaust help

Ok.. i took off the top of the pipe.. the Cap part.. Ok.. so Anyways.. when i got the cap off.. i discovered that it is all one piece.. like there is no way to just pull out the guts.. of the pipe unless i cut the tip top of the pipe.. I'm sorta stumped.. i was just thinking about taking the whole pipe.. and just cutting the pipe to the length i want.. then just cut the very top part of the guts so that i can just weld it back on .. so that the guts don't shoot out.. then pop rivet the top back on.. ??? confusing huh... ?? input would be helpful.. cause i'm stuck.. and i read your post schwartz.. but i must have a reading disorder cause it doesn't make sense to me..

Re: Exhaust help

stock titanium pipe for the r1.. here is what i have done.. so far.. I took and measured from the top 8 inches.. i then.. Took and marked and made a line all the way around the pipe.. so it would be even when i cut it.. So now i'm going to cut all the way threw... the pipe.. the out of the part that falls off.. i'm going to take the packing out.. punch the end thing out.. then spot weld it back on.. then rivet the top piece back on.. Or.. i just might try to pot rivet the whole thing back.. i dunno.. what ever i feel would work best.. ?!?! what do you think..
