XL2 vs pd170?best camcorder?!
I already asked many people which one is better? But I want to make sure I'm doing the right choice before I spend 4000-5000$ or whatever on camera.
Right now thinking more of pd170 just cuz night shots as I heared r garbage on XL2.But my mind still not made up...
Would really apreciate your opinions and comments.

Seriously the pd170 is a sick *** camera I liked it a lot.Never used the GL2 much, but from what I've read its not really worth the money. You really ought to check out the VX-2100. It has lots of features shoots a lot like the pd170, but is more affordable. Go with the Sony either way you'll be happier. All the higher end Sonys shoot really well at night. The only flaw with the pd is that is has a hard time with auto focus if you don't have it set just right for the light conditions,

I dont see the use of going HD yet, you will have to convert it to SD when producing the DVD, by the time HD capable DVD is in the mass market cameras will have advanced so much you will want a new one anyway.
I will vote for the Sony , the XL2 is just overpriced for what you get. I agree with Keeth, give the VX2100 a good look. It is very capable and is a good price for that level of camera. I curently use a VX1000 and will be upgrading to the 2100 when the money is there.

I shoot with a Sony VX-2000. It is great. HD is not there yet. If you read literature about HD cameras, it will most likely say that there is no significant reason to purchase one.

Darius use vx 2000, and from looking at Servin The Streets it's pretty good quality. night and day and rain
I think I gonna stick with pd170.looks like ultimate camera for everything.
as I saw testing yesterday online HD camera is kinda gay at night time.

its like your taking a 200,000 full on professional HD cam and squeezing it down to DV format. They lose so much cause they're still figuring it out. Theres no way the technology is there yet. Its like when the HD TV came out and there were no HD channels on TV but every just had to have it. For what?
Its probably better than normal DV but nothing like true HD quality

Re: XL2 vs pd170?best camcorder?!
i think alot of it depends on what you will be shooting the most...
filming alot at night? sony is def. the way to go, can't beat their lo-lite capabilities. does anyone know how the newer panasonics match up to sony in this regard?
in full light though, i gotta go with a canon. the color saturation is super good and you can get a really crisp clean shot and the focus is very forgiving...
canon is now selling the xl-2 in a body only kit for cheaper. you could try to price that with some lenses from somewhere else (canon lenses, just not from canon, you can find them cheaper like that)...
and as far as hd, you could film it in hd, edit it in hd, go through all the trouble to get it as high rez as possible, only to have the dvd player on the other end not be able to utilize all of the hard work you put into it. gotta agree with everyone that it does not make sense to throw the extra change for something you can't fully use yet...

Good choice on the camera. This thread made me do some research to compare the VX2100 (my next camera) to the PD170 and I honestly cant see enough advantages to the 170 for our type of production to justify the extra money. If you are going to do other types of production then go with the 170 but for stunt work I still think the 2100 gives you more for your money.
