valve adjustment
Im about to do a valve adjustment on a GSXR600 and 929.
I researched alot but was not sure about was purchasing shims.
From reading online and in manuals, it seems you can buy a complete set of shims (different sizes). Then others, check their valves then go to the dealer and request the size shim needed.
Has anyone done a valve job before.........have any tips??
Which way would be better to buy shims, single or set??
Where can you buy shims online.....like a set??
Hopefully this is all I'll need:
Molybdenum disulfide oil (apply to valve lifters)
micrometer
shims from 1.2 - 2.8mm
feeler gauge
Liquid Gasket
Magnet tool
Thanks for any help
alex

Re: valve adjustment
ya that sounds all about right with what you will need. I did a valve job on my 1980 honda cb900, it had 4 valves per cylinder so it was very similer to you gixxer and 929. I didnt have to buy many shims because I swapped some with others. I checked them all and found out which ones were not within tolerance and took out the ones i needed to change but made note of what sizes I needed and in which valve and if I had some shims big enough or small enough to make some of the other valves within tolerance I put them in there. Its just utilizing the ones you have already I ended up only buying one size because I swapped and mixed and matched all the rest. The least I could buy was a little packet of them with about 8 or so in there I think.

Re: valve adjustment
thanks fellas!
I didn't even think about being able to use the ones already in the motor. Good looking.
I'll check them all then head to the local dealer to buy shims.
THanks again for the feedback;

Re: valve adjustment
Some makes call for the adjustment at 16k, or sometimes 24k. What really sucks are the people that try and adjust them, screw it up, and have bring it in anyways to get done right. Or they call and try and play 50 questions on how to do it.

Re: valve adjustment
I checked the 929 (Mileage 26k) clearances and all the exhaust valves seem tight. Spec:0.24-.30mm
I could only get a 0.20mm feeler gauge in them. Does this seem right?? I figured they would be loose if anything. Reading online, I've seen many with tight valves, but wanted to check here on stuntlife and get another opinion.
Has anyone else done a valve adjustment on a 929 or other honda 900, 954, f4i??
thanks
