Re: 520 Master Link Question
That clip style link just snaps into place, just be sure that when it is rolling around the sprocket the clip is going in the right direction so when it hits the sprocket it gets pushed on not ripped off.

i open end goes toward the moto....so face it forward......shouldnt have any problems with that thing poppin off after that...if you want go to you local bike shop and get a master link that you have to press on instead of using the clip...that **** will never come off......its like a dollar or something.

Re: 520 Master Link Question
no worries....yeah if you keep having problems you should definately look into gettin the press link.....and if these keep popping off maybe there is and allignment problem or something does the chain and sprockets look like they are at an angle or something.

Re: 520 Master Link Question
Just to give you an idea of how unreliable the clip links are DID stopped making them for their ER series chains, they now only offer the rivit link for that chain(ERV 3).
Consider yourself lucky that it fell off 2 times and you havent shattered your engine cases. I personally would rather shell out the 100$ I did for the chain press tool, then have a link that could possibly fall off and ruin a whole motor.
But if you must use the clip links put a dab of silicone on the clip after you install it, or have a shop saftey wire it.

Re: 520 Master Link Question
chain clip tool???? whats this madness about...
get a vice grip and some needle nose plyers. thats all the tools you need to put a masterlink on. ive put on at least 50 of them and havent had 1 fall off. just make sure you press the little button on the back of the link with part of the vice grips and on the other side, it has to sit on the plate. you just have to keep re adjusting the vice grips so they gradually get tighter.
then once you have the plate on tight, you slide the clip on with the needle nose plyers and youre done.
takes about 10 minutes max.

Re: 520 Master Link Question
When you put the clip on, make sure that the open end is facing away from the direction of travel. That way if something hits or rubs on the chain, it can't go anywhere.
Also, you can use a little bit of gasket maker on top of the clip to keep it from coming off. Sure, you can see a little red, blue, or black spot on the chain where the gasket maker is covering your link, but it's better than having it popping off all the time. I've never had one come off and my friend raced his dragbikes like this.
Final tip, pinch the clip closed just a little bit with a pair of pliers before you slip it on to make sure it clips on the link tight.

Re: 520 Master Link Question
I know it may sound crazy but after going through about 4 of those clips in a month I said ****it I'm not buyin another one.... but I'm also too cheap for a new rivet link... I decided to race style wire tie it.... I wraped the first "link shaft" twice around with steel wire. twisted until I got to the other shaft and wraped it twisted and cut off the excess just like a brake caliper bolt on a race bike(minus drilling throu the *****).... never came off in 8k miles... got a new chain and chunked the clip as far as I could and used the same techniqe with the steel wire... no problems... trust me it works.
