GSXR-600 Engine Noises

Here's my story. I hope somebody can help me. I bought a '99 GSXR-600 with a blown engine. It came with another engine that I was told was good, but had a bad second gear. So I swapped the trans into the good engine and put it in the bike. I started it today for the first time. It was running shitty (it's 27deg here and snowing) but started getting better as it warmed up. It would stall, then I'd start it, stall, start, etc. It was finally starting to run good then it stalled again. I started it up it made a god-awful grinding/clunking noise. I shut if off. Being curious, I started it again and there was no noise. Now, most of the time when I start it, there's the grinding/clunking noise, but it goes away if I give it some throttle. It's only there at low rpms (maybe under like 3,000). I can't figure out what area of the engine it's coming from. Maybe the top end, not sure. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

BTW - I'm very mechanicly able and the fact that I don't know WTF is wrong is really pissing me off.

Haha, ya there's oil in it. I'm glad you guys said the cam chain tensioner, because that's what I was thinking. I'll check it out and let you guys know how it goes.

..jk.. - Ya, I was hoping to have some video of me finishing off that rear tire for ya, then the fawker started making noises.

Re: GSXR-600 Engine Noises

I ripped the tensioner out and I could compress it in my hand. I have one from a '97 that I figured would drop right in - WRONG. Oh well, more waiting.

That would be my first thought, just one question though, why wouldn't the 97 fit a 99 model, there the same motor????

Re: GSXR-600 Engine Noises

They look very different and have different lengths, but the same mounting pattern. The end that pushes on the cam chain guide is bigger on the '99. The cam chain guide is also different between the two years.
