Spray Painted F2

Im just goin to make this post to continue posting pics of the process going on. I stripped the graphics off of the right rear fairing and sanded it all down good (after plastic welding up a couple little cracks). Put the primer/sealer on and masked off my flame pattern using a pin striping kit (thin vinyl tape). Here are the results. This is my first time laying out flames on anything so keep that in mind the flame design isnt perfect but it works for me :YEAH

Tomarrow im spraying on the blue after masking off the silver flames (should be fun...)

Looks damn good bro.. but wouldn't it have been easier to lay the blue, then do the flames? Just a thought. Pimp either way!

Re: Spray Painted F2

yeah it woulda been much easier to spray the blue and then the silver ontop, but see im trying to avoid the ridge id get around the flames by doing it that way. Theres quite a ridge around them now ontop of the primer, but once i mask off the flames and spray the blue (hope to GOD it doesnt leak through) it should even out the surfaces. And the ridge shouldnt be as noticable.

Im just really goin to be bummed if the blue leaks through onto the flames heh.

Re: Spray Painted F2

take a bunch of masking tape and tape directly over the flames then cut the outline with a razorblade

Re: Spray Painted F2

220 grit ontop of the paint, sand the **** outa it. Spray on Primer/sealer (dont cheap out get the good stuff and save time) do 2 decently thick coats of that (avoid runs hah). Sand the primer with 600 grit. Then spray on your first base coat of color. I tried wet sanding my front fender after the 2nd layer of basecoat and it just kinda messed up the coloring (did it with 1000 grit) so i sprayed on a 3rd layer of color and got the below result on the fender.

I think this time im just going to avoid wetsanding all together cause it'll be impossible with 2 colors and i dont plan on clear coating.

Im using Duplicolor paints and primer (kinda spendy 4.50 a can)

Heres my front fender i did a week ago or so.

Re: Spray Painted F2

Looks pretty sweet man. If done right then you should always lay your bulk colour first and work over top as its easier to mask/hide any little miss haps. If ya dont like using masking tape then you can always use clear contact. Thats what i use when i do some air brushing as its easier to cover bulk area's and you can see where you have to cut out if you are tracing a pattern. Just my though. Should look tight when its finished, can't wait to see it

Re: Spray Painted F2

Well, last night i taped over the top of the flames with masking tape then attempted tracing around them with a razor.... Wasnt a good idea. Unless you have an exteremly steady hand and exact tracing skills dont even try this lol. Then my worst fears came true the masking tape pulled up the flames all over the place. So i had to go back to square one this morning and sand it all down then re-prime. Its got its blue base color now and thats drying.

Im just goin to deal with the ridge im goin to get around the silver flames and paint them ontop of the color. Because it'll just look/feel like a vinyl decal basically so oh well. Damn now i gotta redo the flames which took me almost an hour last time. But atleast i have the technique down now hah.

Re: Spray Painted F2

oh sh|t dude that sucks!

yeah clear contact paper would be better than tape as it's usually less sticky.

Re: Spray Painted F2

thanks for the kind words, im excited to do the side farings and get an idea on how its all goin to look together . Should be awhile befor its all finished though, its definatly a time consuming process. But much less of so doing it the way i am now (just the silver ontop of the blue base)

Re: Spray Painted F2

Have you thought about laying a silver coat, letting it try, putting the flames on there, and then painting over the whole thing with blue? Once you take the flames decal off after everything is dry it'll leave silver flames that are actually paint and not a decal

Re: Spray Painted F2

...that'd do the same exact thing as im doing you just reversed the process. And then instead of having a ridge around the edge of the flames going up it'd be going "down" i guess since the blue would be above the silver and that'd be a huge waste of silver paint.
