just got an f4i....problem now...

hey guys....sold my r1 on friday, and on saturday i got a salvaged '01 f4i with 3k miles on it....anyway....i know it went down cuz the fairings are all scratched and cracked but the motor and frame and everything is fine. the battery was completely dead cuz it was sitting for like 2 months, so my buddy gave me an extra battery he had from his gsx......i crammed that one in ( it is a little too tall but i stuffed it in) and took it for a test drive last night...everything was fine...then tonight i took it for another test drive and all the electrical started acting weird....the needle on the tach was jumpin all around the display would cut in and out...and all the warning lights would come on and off.....like it's got a short somewhere......i'm gunna look into it later this week but thought i would throw this out and see if anyone has any ideas....thanx

get your r1 back man.... the battery could be dying i know bikes have some problems like that when the battery is dead

or loose connection at the bat

Re: just got an f4i....problem now...

really.......i've never heard of that.......that would cause the electrical problem?.....(i know plugs are connected to the electrical...but don't see why or how they would cause any faults from not being used) you had the same prob??

Re: just got an f4i....problem now...

just a guess here about the plug issue, but if the plugs were bad, the tach would be jumping around b/c of cylinder's misfirring, and the lights coming on and off b/c of the engine intermittently quiting.

No No No, spark plugs? No, its probably you Rectifier, also known as a voltage regulator, You can find it mounted to the side of your subframe. Replace this with an aftermarket one from ebay and get a new battery and you should be good. Usually signs of this going bad are:
Battery not holding a charge
Headlights and Tach going out.
Bike cutting out when moving....

This is just my It sounds like this is what it is but dont be pissed at me if it doesnt work. Ask around. Im pretty sure this is it though.

Sounds more like this to me. It's not the plugs, trust me. Deffinately something to do with the charging.

Re: just got an f4i....problem now...

hey bro. check the neg. (black) cable to your battery. i had the same problem. then i realized the neg wasnt completly tight. i had to push my bike about 7 miles back to my house , just because of something stupid
but if something is amiss with that cable the instrument cluster will go crazy, then if the short is long enough the fuel pump will sputter

Re: just got an f4i....problem now...

you can have breaks in your pos cables everything will slowly die until it get power again. a tiny short you wont notice much. but if the electical loses its ground, it instantly dies. ive had both problems b4

that's what i was thinking....i had a rectifier go bad on my R1 and all the electrical cut out.....then about a mile later it died....i'm gunna throw the correct battery in it...check the connections then throw in a rectifier if it still does it.......thank you everyone for the replys

Make Sure That Is Not The Height Of The Battery You Put In, Crushing The Ecu Under The Seat. Did The Same To Mine, But It Was The Plug On The Ecu Was Bending Off The Contact... Just An Idea...

that's exactly what i was thinking.........when i put the battery my buddy gave me, it was too tall and i had to cram the ecu between the battery and seat.....so i thought my problem was there, so i bought a brand new battery yesterday ($100), crammed it in and everything seemed to be fine until i touched the gauges........then they went all crazy again, everytime i wiggle the gauge it sets it off...so my problem has to be with the wiring behind it.....i started to take it off but split my knuckle open in the process.....threw my wrench at the wall then went inside.....i'll mess with it later
