General stuntbike setup

Im still getting the feel of my 01 GSXR600.

When I stand up on the pegs I feel very high and out of place, but I am 6'2". So that got me wondering are their any differences to the way you setup a stunter?

I know about the sprokets, cages, 12 bar, thumb brake, low rear tyre pressure.
But do you set your pegs lower?
& any changes to suspension?
etc

Re: General stuntbike setup

Everyone will have a different answer here mate.

Most people tend not to change peg positioning etc.. and theres some real tall people here like Billy, Ghostie etc. Ghostie has some bigger pegs but not moved or anything, think billy had a cheater peg for a while (a peg fixed further down the subframe towards end of bike) so maybe its worth trying that if you're really uncomfortable? ask billy for tips on installing one etc.

Personally I like my suspension pretty stiff don't like it bouncing around in wheelies etc. Same for the front ... altho mine is spongy as needs a heavier oil.

You just gotta set up to how you like it really.. play with the suspension until you find it most comfortable.. as for standing up, it's just something you'll get used to with practice.

Re: General stuntbike setup

OK. My feeling off balance is probably due to lack of experience standing up. stationary my body is used to a bycycle (lower possition), only really been riding this year, but stunting was the reason I sat my test. Ironic cos its probably whats most likely to loose it

Re: General stuntbike setup

I feel the same mate, tried a cheater peg before I had back brake control which resulted with a scrape/crash.

as for felling comfortable,
Im looking at some chunky rear stunt pegs on the hai site but the are expensive with shipping. 90 quid with shipping !!! ghosty said his were from a honda chopper or somit.

Re: General stuntbike setup

man you need to lower your pressure in you tires a bit for stability. I would go for some where like 15 psi in the rear to start with. And defo dont get a thumb brake setup man they cost a bomb and are not viable for stunting as you need to position them so you can get at them in a few different angles.

What ever anyone says to you the postion will feel weird for a long time. Some people go for foot in the bar first but you really should go for staggrered. Try and clutch it up from slower speeds like near nothing and remember its all about physics . ie. you need forward momentum to keep the bike up when you are just starting and you need to go higher to slow down.

you have control of the bike you just have remeber that. Bp is nearly the same on all bikes where the forks are level with the floor running perpendicular with the ground. To slow it down either lean back off the bike and brake like hell with the forks level or go past bp and brake you wont beleive how quick you can slow it down with the rear brake. It is a fine balance between brake and throttle just go and practice over and over again. It took me a good six months to get bp man everyone seems to learn it quicker than i did. just get out there as much as possible man.:YEAH

Think you hit the nail on the head there...

TBH burning the back wheel up is scaring the **** out of me, im hung off the front of the bike and shitting it that I will let the front brake out trying to control the revs. Question: can I practice one handed throttle & braking with the bike switched off, or will that flood the motor?

no you can't practice it with the bike switched off - the bike won't react when it's off. You need the reaction to your control inputs to get better.

but if you wanna jump on your bike in the garage twiddle the throttle and make all the noises go for you life - I do too

if it feels wierd doing front peg stand ups, try staggered - left leg on passenger peg - start small again with this change of weight first time round the bike will want to turn as soon as u lift the front up... just a matter of re-distributing weight of ur body over bike and on pegs. then build up to BP.

good luck!!! :YEAH

Re: General stuntbike setup

if you wanna do stand ups try them feet staggered a lot easier to get them up, tyre pressure 5-6 psi, If you are a bit ham fisted with the throttle try this pull back the throttle grip drill a hole thru the end of the throttle tube right thru the bar itself 3.5mm, take a needle file and elongate the hole in the throttle tube only not by much though next tap the hole in the bar 4-5 mm tap then fit a dome head cap screw don't tighten it so the throttle tube won't turn hand tight is enough slide your grip back into place you should now have tiny amount of throttle, you can now practice your slow wheelies because you have very limited throttle you will learn b.p. quicker and when you bail from the bike it won't launch into orbit anywhere near as bad as a fully open throttle I know two people who were up at b.p. in 6 weeks using this mod just gave them more confidance

Re: General stuntbike setup

Thats very good advise from sfd. Def the way to learn bp as it stops ya from using the throttle to keep the front up. ya only need about a degree of turn on the throttle though. I think im the only one in our group that didnt learn BP this way. Def learn staggerd too.

Re: General stuntbike setup

Thanks sfd for the mod info :YEAH and im glad vandal seconded it because it sounded a bit high end when I first read it (like the thumb brake).
Is their any chance you could take a photo of it please?, i might need to get a garage to do it for me as I don't have many tools yet.

Re: General stuntbike setup

I will take a pic of daves (SFD) throttle at the week end and post it. Thats if i can get dave to stop and put the screw back in for the pic as once he gets going ya cant stop him ha ha. Ya really dont need a garage to do it its so simple. you will see by the pic !!!

Re: General stuntbike setup

Best thing you can do right now is ride, then ride some more. stop then ride again. fill up the tank and ride a bit more till its dark. Then ride again then a little bit more riding. Then go home and come back again and ride. Have a drink but only a bit cuz you need to ride again. then ride a bit more. Oh dont forget to ride there and back.

Ride:YEAH

Best way to learn is to ride

Re: General stuntbike setup

@GHOSTIE - where would you fit those foot pegs? or do they replace your standard pegs.
