What machine did you start out on???
Jus wondering what everyone started out on...
Me first...
At the tender age of 4, I got my very first mini-bike... like 3hp Briggs&stratton engine, i thought i was a pimp... at 6 i graduated to a Go-cart, prolly same engine...then at 8 I got my 86 Suzuki RM 80 Dirt bike. My parents ended up buying a 87 Suzuki DR100 as well (I had 2 brothers, so we STILL had to share!) and after a while we got a 200sx 3 wheeler... that wasnt long for the world, but not too long following that, we got a 125 quadrunner and an ATC125M 3 wheeler... pimped those for a bit, and at 13, I bought my first quad (on my own.) a 1986 Suzuki QuadSport230. Pimped that for a bit, then sold it to my buddy (it had all sorts of problems!) a few months later, picked up a 85 Honda 200s 3 wheeler, rocked that till i was 14, and had to sell it to pay for the transmission i broke in my moms car on a late night "borrow" cruise...
A short while after that, my buddy sold me the quadsport back for a good deal, and I rode the **** out of that for a summer, before it was stolen out of my shed one day while i was in school...
Didnt have a quad for a while after that, and I think the next one I owned was when i was about 19... i dunno the exact timeframe, but I bought a 350x off same said friend who owned the quadsport for a while... rebuilt the top-end in that, rode it for a while, then sold it to a buddy. he never rode it much, and thought he wanted to buy a katana I had picked up, so he traded my my old wheeler, some home made warrior with a 550 bike engine, and a few bills for the katana... I had the 350x for a while, then my brother bought it off me and from there i dont know where it went... the warrior was a lost cause, so i pawned it off on my buddy, and I dont know what he ever ended up doing with it... i know when we had it running, it was a fun machine... cept the chain would fall off ALL the time...
from there, i went a few years without a quad... bought my humble home, a few months later, during a thunder storm, lightning struck a tree in the back yard and it fell tight next to my trailer... It damaged the roof a lil bit, so my insurance company cut me a check for 4G's... My buddy at the time had a rancher, so I did what any sensable 20 year old would do... I bought a 4 wheeler with the check! Unfortunatly, I bought a 2001 Arctic Cat Bear Cat 500. what a toad... nice machine when i got it... warn whinch, showroom condition, 280 miles... but a 2" liftkit, and many unsucsessful wheelies and hill climbs later, i sold it for 2200 dollars... not even a full six months later... that was in 01...
03, I bought the Z400, then in may of 04, the 954rr... july of same year, **** hit the fan with the wife, and since the loan for the bike was in her name, she took it. The loan for the quad was in her name as well, but thankfully it was one of those 90 days same as cash loans, so on the 89th day we refinanced it, and they did it as a "debt consolidation" loan instead of the secured load on the quad.. So she still pays On Phears Quad... go figure!
kinda got ahead of myself.. so, this past july, sold the Z to phear after buying my water toy... a 91 Kawasaki x2... was quadless for almost 6 months, then got back in the game on my "other" 03 Z400... basicly a spittin image of the previous z i had...
phew... my hands and eyes are hurtin...lol.... im sure i forgot about a few in there, like the sleds, but u get the idea... my vehicle history is much much longer...lol

Re: What machine did you start out on???
a mini bike and a old school honda 50 back in the mid to late 70's.
then started racing desert enduro with my stepfather early 80's.yz175 Then in my teen years a mako 490 and xr500. way too many dirtbikes and streetbikes to list more than 20 of each; but my senior year in H.S. it was a kz 900 and a maiko 490. and a 68 chevelle (396)
2 wheeled motocrossing and hairscambles for about 25 years or so then switched up to quads about 5 years ago after 3 knee surgeries.

Re: What machine did you start out on???
I started out on a '95 Polaris TrailBoss. Not much power, but enough to start out on and a blast to trail ride.
In '98 I bought a '97 Polaris Scrambler 500 4x4. That was a little bit better than the 'Boss, certainly a lot more power.
Neither were that great for stunting, IMO. You could pull wheelies on both of them easily, but stoppies/endos were a little bit harder.
I havent owned a quad of my own since '00, but my family had always had quads, so I ride those from time to time. I ride my brother's '05 Predator from time to time, thats a fun little quad. Once youve ridden a manual clutch/manual tranny quad you'd never wanna go back to a CVT.

Re: What machine did you start out on???
At like 9 I started out on a Honda quad, a little 90, brand new, so I think it was a 96'. Rode the **** outta that thing for years, after that I moved on to a 2001 Suzuki RM80 at about 14, I always wanted a dirtbike from the beginning anyways, but ya take what ya can get eh? Many wrecks later trying to wheelie that RM80(Gotta love a 2-stroke powerband) I moved onto bigger bikes.
At 17, I finally learned how to save money, and I bought an 04 Ninja 250 wreck, fixed it, rode it for a summer, then I wanted to get into stunting, so I took out a personal loan in 05' and ended up buying an 04' F4i wreck, fixed it, and its what I ride now.

BTW, I started out on a Kawi 110, then went to a Suzi 250 then the 250 Trailboss then learned to ride on one on my no name hunk of **** and now the 450R that needs to be returned in April to honda after I'm done beating on it, then the plan is to get a 636 or a 900 and go terrorize the neighborhood

Re: What machine did you start out on???
I never had bikes/quads as a kid, well there was my buddies yz 80 that we all used to take turns driving. Then in '02 my friend bought a banshee, I drove that (not very well mind you) three or four times, saved up over the winter and got the KFX. Right now I'm looking for a '00-'03 model street bike for $5000 or so...

I cant argue with you though. The best muddin' quads are automatics (Grizzly and Sportsman) but they have their limitations.
To each their own I guess. For me, a CVT quad was just so boring to ride. I like banging it through the gears and having the ability to pop the clutch to do a wheelie any time I want.
With a CVT quad you pretty much have to come to a complete stop and do a brake stand to do a wheelie.
