best tires for riding in snow

I tried to take the 400ex around the backyard in about 4" to 9" of snow (drifts) and it couldnt get out of its own way... I have shredders on it right now... (basic MX style tire) and they seem hopeless.... is there a set of tires that would make riding in that much snow feasable... I thought about sand paddles, has any one tried them in the snow? Thanks!

Re: best tires for riding in snow

I've used Geckos in the snow before and they worked pretty good.

Re: best tires for riding in snow

My holeshots on my EX seemed to work pretty good..those are basically the same as shredders right?

What size do you have? Mine are 20"....if you have 18's, that would explain it.

Anyway, my suggestion would be some 22" Kenda Vipers. There are many other tires out there, and probably a lot that are better...but I had those Vipers on one of my previous quads and they hooked up really well in the snow. I hated the overall looks of them on the quad, but I guess function is more important. I think overall it's good to stick with a balloon type tire for deep snow riding.

a snow plow works best, or you could ask barry if you could use a pair of chains I guess

well 9 inches is pretty deep for a quad , its bottoming out , i dont have any problem with the stock tires on my 400ex in up to at least 6 inches , but im looking into getting a set of 22 inch blackwaters for the snow ,

Blackwaters on Snow = Good

Blackwaters on Ice or Packed snow = not so good

hehehe...from what I've seen at least.

As for tracks...Jordan from our crew rocks them on his 4x4....those things are so nasty!

I tried to do em on a mx380 but even though the sled is light its just too front heavy, to balance a sled you would need a mid or rear engine design

Re: best tires for riding in snow

I run blackwaters on my ex and they pull like crazy in the sand and mud. I've never been near snow or ice with them. They're heavier that stock tires cause they're 4ply, and mine are taller than stock even though they are both 20's.
