yfz 450 help

Alright my roomate just got a new 450 and rolled it the other day, and bent his steering shaft. This is the first time I've worked on a quad and I cant figure out how to get the fu(ker off. I tried a impact gun and the nut on the bottom wont budge. Someone give me an idea how to get the bastard off - looks like theres a locking ring in the bolt .... oh yeah and whats a good aftermarket steering shaft , is lonestar good?

Not trying to be a smart ***, but did you take the cotter pin out before you tried to take the nut off?

As far as what brand of steering stem, Lonestar is good, but I prefer Hauser.

Re: yfz 450 help

all i can say is seeing that the stem is junk get a big a$$ bar and put it on the end of your 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch rachet and push like hell but be sure to take your tierods off first i had no troubles with my 450r and couldnt imagine the yamaha is much different also try a gibson stem i got a +1 antivibe stem on my quad and its pisser

Re: yfz 450 help

well dude i dont know what to tell you i went to bikebandit.com and they have exploded views of everything for all quads and bikes and there is nothing else holding that steering stem in there this is going to sound stupid but get the impact gun put it on the nut and tighten it for like 15-30 sec then try to loosen it this trick usally works for me with pain in the a$$ lugnuts

Re: yfz 450 help

If the tightening trick doesn't work, try heating it up with a propain torch a bit. If locktight was used on it, the heat will help losen it.

Yea , what she said !!............................. WHAT A WOMAN :YEAH !!

Lube it up ?
Sure the cotter pin is out ?
Sometimes if you stand the quad up you can get a better angle on it and you can get some good leverage with a long hollow pipe or somthin ??

Re: yfz 450 help

Just looked at the service manual to be positive, but there isn't anything more than the lower nut on the stem that needs to come off. It is kinda tight, should have 130 ft/lbs of torque on it.

Re: yfz 450 help

If it comes down to it and you still cant get that 8itch off just get an air cut off tool and chop the nut off, and replace the nut when you get the new stem.
