CR80 problems

I got my friends 1988 cr80 here, had no spark, i cleaned the sand out of the fly wheel/stator section. I dont know what the correct name for it is. And we got spark. Started it up and it ran for about a min, so i cleaned it again and same thing, i never took the fly wheel off though, it keeps doin the same thing. Is there a certain distance that that black box should be away from the wheel? Something i should do about timing? I dont know help please.

Re: CR80 problems

It definetly could be a carb problem. What exactly happens when you start it though? Does it always run for a min or does it sometimes not even start?

that happend it me once and it turned out to be a problem with the slide in the carb. one other thing you could try is to go up a couple sizes in the pilot jet, that could also be a problem. good luck with it!

Catman will become famous soon enough
Re: CR80 problems

Following this thread.
Is this the first time this year the bike was started?
Is it spewing gas out the overflow ?
was the gas removed before it was put up for the winter ?

Sometimes if the gas sits in that carb for a couple months the gas goes bad and a small amount of gas goes bad quick.
On a bike that small even a small film can clog the small holes in the carb.
disasemble the carb and dip it ?????

yamaha makes a carb cleaner that you mix with gas and draw it up into the carb through the gas line. It works GREAT !!

Good luck !!

Are you sure it doesn't need a top end or other motor work? Small 2-strokes are well known for wearing out fast.

Re: CR80 problems

Well when you need a top end, you cant kick start it at all right? The kick starter wont move and the bike right? If that is so then i do not need a top end b/c i can start it sometimes but just for a second. Maybe piston rings? I dont know, thanks.

The only way to really tell is to do a compression check. A top end that is even a little worn could possibly cause the bike to do some really wierd sh#t. But if the owner doesn't know any specifics about the engine's history I'd replace the entire top end just to rule out that possibility.

just get a service manual it will walk you through it. Not too difficult if you are patient and pay attention to the manual.
