An Oswego man was killed Thursday afternoon after he fell off his motorcycle on Interstate 55, police said.
Garrett D. Rinehart, 34, was coming off the Lemont Road exit to go southbound on the highway around 3:40 p.m.
"As he came off the ramp, traffic was starting to slow," said Sgt. Allison Renaud of the Illinois State Police.
Rinehart didn't realize that the pickup truck in front of him had slowed down, and he rear-ended it, Renaud said witnesses at the scene recounted.
The impact made him fall off his bike onto the pavement in the center lane of traffic.
Rinehart was then run over by another pickup truck pulling a trailer, Renaud said.
He was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove but was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m.
Renaud said Rinehart was wearing a helmet at the time, but that the extent of the accident was too great for it to save him.
The center and right lanes of the road were closed until 7:30 p.m. Thursday, slowing traffic from the city for hours.
