so you are saying that even though soot is produced from a chemical reaction it has no chemical effects on oil at all

i never said it did ... i said modern diesel engines, i think the gov't made the companies get tougher in emissions in 2004 .... but if the oil is proven to produce less soot in engines with egr why would it not be beneficial to our motors also

I'd say 5k is safe for sure unless you have an old car that leaks or something and as long as you keep oil in it it's going to be fine.

Here's the word of the day: Colloidal solution
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colloid

If soot chemically reacted with the oil, filtering it out of the oil would not be possible and it would not make a difference.

At the end of the day I don't really care if my engine will last "only" 400,000 miles with Rotella synth and 500,000 miles with the super oil from valvolene. I plan on getting a new truck at 300,000 or before.
