That's the problem right there.
I wasn't there so I don't know which one you are talking about. I am talking about the inner, which is the only one that goes under the axle seal, so would be the only one thaqt you would have to worry about not putting back before installing the seal.
The proper way is imact with a torque stick to install, socket to remove.

can i clean that with brake cleaner? as long as i repack everything right? freaking diff fluid all in the bearings

is that specific to large trucks or for all vehicles?? I never knew there was a set ft/lb's for rims.....I just tighten them across from eachother about the same?? I mean they don't give you a torque wrench to change a flat just a tire iron?? Should I check mine??
Also do you think the original damage was due to improper torque or did your tire/rim take a good hit somewhere along the way??

That's a torque wrench. A torque stick is a colored extension on the impact wrench. They always use the torque wrench but they usually get it too tight to begin with so it clicks immediately.

they put the gun on the lowest setting, which is still usually too much
