OK, I feel like an idiot!
ok, a couple years ago i could ride a wheelie on my bike as far and long as i wanted to, and then i had a motorcycle wreck and was laid up in bed from knee surgery for a few months.
here recently i have started riding again and have been trying to wheelie and i just cant do it anymore
any tips for me? i feel stupid for asking such a basic question....
what gear do you guys do them in?

Re: OK, I feel like an idiot!
is it a hardtail or a soft tail?
hard tail generally get up the frist few feet easier, but once up don't feel as solid as a soft tail.
soft tails are harder to get up off the ground, but once up and at BP, they feel solid as a rock.
I can help you, but it's different for each bike. please clearify if it's a BMX, mountain and what size tires it has on.
also, more air in the tires makes it easier to bring up, but harder to keep balanced side to side.

Re: OK, I feel like an idiot!
well, my schwinn is a softtail and my pacific is a hardtail, cant do it on either bike.
and please dont say put it in the middle or large gear on the front....i built the pacific from a bunch of parts i had in storage and the only set of 3 piece cranks i had had bent gears except for the small one......so out came the grinder and i cut the 2 outter rings off, now the bike is just a 7 speed.....lol.....but i dont have any money in it, but i will soon cause im going to buy some road tires for it.
both of the bikes are 26" mountain bikes.

Re: OK, I feel like an idiot!
if i where you,i'd go with the softtail. I've ridden both, and soft tails are a hell of alot easier to keep up to me.
what you should do is put it in 4th or 5th (myabe lower depending on bike) and then lean WAYY forward, like your gonna eat some food off the bars, then push off the bars as HARD as you can. once your arms are almost extended, stop pushing and pull HARD. this will cuase your body weight to help bring the front off the ground.
to get the pedaling going, you should trying what i can "clutching". You know when you stop pedaling, and then pedal again? how it the pedal engages hard really quick? do that JUST as the front end comes off the ground from your body weight.
once up, just keep two fingers on the rear brake, and i'd say keep pulling the bars toward you a small amount

Re: OK, I feel like an idiot!
hey one more thing.
remember, your rear brake is also how you slow down! so if you tihnk your going to fast on the wheelie, just bring it up past balance point and give the rear brake a tap, and bring it down. this'll slow you down a lil bit, do it like 5 pedals in a row and you'll be slowing down good.
once you learn to coaster, you can just coaster to slow down, but that's for later.

Re: OK, I feel like an idiot!
well, i successfully ate pavement and ended up with a severely tweaked front end (forks r actually bent, the stem is still where it was b4.....
got it up to balance point and realized my brakes needed to be adjusted BADLY guess i realized it a little to late eh?

Re: OK, I feel like an idiot!
how the hell did you manage to bend your fork? is it made of paper?
my forks have taken TONS of hits, and they are the cheapo wally world forks. Not tweaked or bend in the least, and I'v ****ed so meny wheelie up it's not even funny!
I'm willing to bet its the front wheel has shifted, or your stemhas budged. just loosen it all the way, put the front wheel between your legs, and turn the bars with your hands.
anywho, yeah, make sure to have good brakes.
how fast where you going anyway??

Re: OK, I feel like an idiot!
these forks r pretty freakin old! i have some trek forks i would like to use, but the threaded part isn't long enough for this frame.....might swap everything mack over to the Next....thats the bike i used to be able to do the **** on......
and no, its not the stem tweaked, its in the same place it was b4....
