Cant say for myself but Ive heard powdercoating can weaken metal, maybe it was overheated or not heat treated properly. was it a new wheel or salvaged/ repaired? Is he OK.
At least he can sell the uncracked frame

thats the rim that came with the bike....he bought the bike brand new,and went pimp on it.....carbon fiber all over,powdercoat ,paint,all types of ****...hes ok just really pissed.....

DAMN, I've seen that happen but only after a very big impact. I would be talking to the powder coaters about there process and if somebody baked that rim to hot or to long and weakened it.

wow, i would be dragging that bike on a flat-deck to the dealer and letting them know what was going to happen. new bike for me, **** bike for dealer to deal with. That isn't supposed to happen, when they make wheels they go through impact tests to make sure they can withstand regular/hardcore riding and front/side impacts. regular riding doesn't blow wheel spokes apart like that.

man that **** just happened to a friend of mine on his r1. pulled out of his house going about 35 down the road, not goose'n it no wheelies nothing, and the rear wheel just exploded.
