i went helicopter skiing in BC once. We were at the top of a mountain 20 miles away from the nearest road, having lunch, and a snowmobile crew rolled up

It's a belt system with a centrifugal (drive) clutch that runs off the crank. That's connected by belt to a torque sensing (driven) clutch that is attached to the drive shaft with a chain. The drive clutch gets larger while the driven clutch gets smaller.
