any opinions on a toby damper

I can pick up a Toby damper for a 929 pretty damn cheap. Has anybody seen/heard of any problems with them?
I have a Sprint damper already but this unit is smaller and looks like it will tuck in by the tank a little closer. Thx

Re: any opinions on a toby damper

Erik (Welepro) just broke his Toby on his 954 Friday when we were riding. The unit was pressed togethera nd it pulled apart doing an endo. Toby refuses to warranty it even though it is 3 months old. Needless to say Toby for sale.. New damper coming soon.

Toby apparently has terrible customer service with thier defective products.

when dealing with a damper, i highly suggest you dont just buy whatever is cheapest.

you get what you pay for, and that might be a tankslapper.

That is where my Toby Stabalizer broke in May. I think that had something to do with the endo crash I had too.
It broke mid endo.

I have had a toby for about 2 months with no problems. So far so good. Paid 325.00 for it on ebay.

Re: any opinions on a toby damper

I decided to get my Toby after doing TONS of research on them. They were supposed to be the best rod-style damper you can get, and it retailed for $430. Nowhere near the cheapest one out there. You can get a Daytona for under $200...and just ask Shugg, he's never had a problem with his.

As it looks now, for the small metal bracket that broke on mine, they want me to pay $125 to replace it, saying they don't warranty the brackets, just the piston itself.

I've never crashed my bike, and only used that damper for a few months, so it's clearly a defect not my riding that broke it.

To sum it up.......Unless it has a different mounting system than mine, I'd take a pass. I'm currently trying to get Lockhart Phillips to exchange it for a Scotts....but you know how that goes.

Re: any opinions on a toby damper

I've gone through a shindy/daytona,2 different hyperpros(forget about the 2 stage valving ****)scotts,gpr,and a storz.
I'm not happy with any of them, storz seems to work the best as long as you change out the fluid. To bad the brackets aren't steel.
Try ohlins If you have the dough...

Re: any opinions on a toby damper

I have to say i had a toby side mount on my 96 gsxr 750 going on 4 year and not one thing went wrong with it . it held up to about 3 bad crashes and on the 4th on my guy who has it now looped a wheelie and that was the end of it but for as long as i had it i never and i mean never ever got one tank slaper and it was great for endos. Right now i have a storz on my 900 RR but thats only b/C the toby was back order at that time but i can tell you that the storz is good but not like the toby ,hope that helps /

Re: any opinions on a toby damper

i run hyperpro, works for me, real stiff, but any dampner needs rebuilt after a year from all the abuse, and alot of these dampers are coming out with speed induced models, where the damping increases as speed goes up , but say on a stoppie when you first start its stiff but then as you slow down , so does the damping (if that makes sense), so i got the constant speed control,
