Both are very smooth. Since 900's are not FI they will only run on the bar like 10 sec. The 99 is a better bike though. Stronger engine and better forks and brakes

the 96 & the 99 both have the same exact motor. the 919cc. The 98 has better front brakes. I had a 98 900 That I could drag wide open in 1st to a stop & it wouldn't stall. Just keep a full tank of fuel in it.
Great bikes.

NEW FOR 1998
-Power output increased to 123 bhp and 65.8 ft/lbs of torque.
-Combustion chambers, intake and exhaust ports reshaped to reduce airflow resistance for sharper engine response.
-New RC45-inspired, aluminum composite cylinder sleeves are high-pressure formed from sintered aluminum powder impregnated with ceramic and graphite. The composite sleeves are 21.3 ounces lighter and provide better wear resistance and superior heat dissipation than the steel sleeves they replace.
-Redesigned pistons feature new LUB-Coat solid lubricant to minimize friction between the piston and cylinder wall.
-Carburetor vacuum piston size increased to provide quicker response to throttle transitions.
-New, compact eight-plate clutch features improved friction plate material and is 9.1 ounces lighter than the ten-plate clutch it replaces, maintaining overall performance and reliability.
-Transmission strengthened in key areas to provide enhanced durability under sustained, high RPM operation.
-New six-speed gearbox has revised ratios to improve overall performance and provide a 3% higher top speed potential.
-Power output increased to 123 bhp and 65.8 ft/lbs of torque.

93 99 are the same cases, the internals very from year to year, 93-94 ....95......96-97.......98-99..... as far as stronger that is the biggest myth going, the oil pickup and oilpump are the same from 96-99, i have had every year apart and examined, true the cylinders differ and the trans-clutch differs, but overall there is no significant difference, the 96-97 motor can be bored out, the 98-99 with titanium sleeves cannot, but honestly have you ever heard of anyone blowing a cylinder? the main problem with the 893-919 is the oil sump, if you run low oil and twelve rod number three always looses a prime and scores the bering, now many people say to run 5 quarts, or over fill.........i have honestly seen this help, but in the end constant abuse leads to the same result. there are alot of myths out there of how a 98-99, is so much stronger, i have run both and i honestly see no difference, i think 98-99 clutches are weaker and burn up faster, especialy when learning twelves constantly woopin first, however thats just my opinion. now if you are gonna stunt you will probably just sproket the hell out of it anyway, nullifing any gearing advantage the 98-99 has over the 96-97 so my advice is go with the lower mile, less neglected-abused bike, i have found that a properly broken in RR motor for some reason is tighter than an abused neglected motor and they seem to last longer. just my opinion, around these parts they call me 9-hunit for a reason,.............."read the name tag gramma your in my world now!"
any questions pm me im always happy to help a brotha out.
