Wow....I always wondered if that had ever happened and now I have my answer...
The plate idea sounds like a plan....A good structural welder should be able to hook you up for sure..
But you may want to start saving for a replacement frame...

we welded the crack first then connected them with a welded plate. i'll still break it, i know i will.
