Question Yamaha R1? Stunt or No Stunt?

Guys,
I have a 2001 Yamaha R1 that is mint. My show off bike! I bought it brand new and have never stunted it. Ocassionally a stoppie or wheelie but not much! Always wanted to keep it pretty. Anyway I also have a 94 ZX7 that has been my stunt bike and it is on it's way out! Caught it on fire doing a sick burnout for the Starboyz, wrecked it countless times, motor is noisy, won't start sometimes, etc. It is beginning to leave me sit when I need it to work! I have considered being a man and stunting my R1 but I hear they are lousy stunt bikes, and once you start stunting a bike, there is NO turning back!

WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK???

I want honest answers with back up facts. I do not want to hear that you don't like them because they are not Hondas, or Suzukis I have owned everything at least once and liked them all! I want to know technical reasons why from guys who have ridden them, or know why guys don't like them.

For those of you that like them for stunting, why?

Thanks guys!

That is one sweet bike, as far as stunting it, I dont know nuthin about the R1, I always ride Honda. I have heard that the R1 is an awesome stunter. If that were my bike, I would keep er sweet, you know how it wheelies (I could tell from the wear on your front tire, hehehe),, look around for a used R1, buy it, & stunt the **** out of it.:D

Don't do it....that bike is WAY to nice! Maybe if you didn't already put all though upgrades on it my answer would be different. You can stunt any bike, yet the diffcuilty factor will be different on each bike. Every bike has its weak points and strong points  .

I wouldn't do it either...but i get to that in a second.

R1's aren't bad stunt bikes. I hear they are twitchy on one wheel but i mean look at Darius busting all his combos on his. Any bike can be stunted, its just a matter of getting the feel for it.

BAck to my original point. That bike is WAY too NICE. Leave her be, get another beater bike. Lord knows i wish i had a beater bike. My 600 use to be MINT. Then i started stunting her and **** went down hill from there. Now she has fur on the front, a bent fairing stay, fucked up front fairing, dented in tank, rashed plastics on the left side, blown fork seal. This is how she use to look.

Ok...some good feadback so far. Here is my problem...and has been the biggest issue for me. The "beaters" seem to be unreliable! I guess I thought maybe the R1 would get beat up a bit but would be far more reliable for me! I could go buy a used 750 or 900RR but would I be getting someone elses problems again? There are alot of guys stunting brand new bikes off the show room floor. Why?

Jimmy, you ride a mint red R1 don't you? I am sure it is a little beat up but in the pics it looks good doing 12's! Do I have to worry about the motor in the R1? The tranny?

I guess I am wondering if anyone has anything bad to say about the bike! I run it at track days and it is one of the most impressive and confidence building bikes I have ever put my butt on! It also feels much smaller to me than a GSXR1000 even though I know the GSXR is lighter and more powerful! I bought a beat up tank for it, took off the plastics, put every frame slider I could buy on it and am thinking about if I want to stunt it! See picture below of it nekkid...that is my wife wheeling it!

If not the R1, What bike would you all suggest if you could pick one, and why?

Thanks!

I ride a 2000 R1 and it is my only bike. Like you said, it looks pretty, but you know you want to stunt it. My bike use to look like yours but now it has character:cool: Anyways, I've ridden (wheelies, stoppies) preety much on all of the late model bikes and I can tell you that the R1 is the most unstable out of the pack. Its really not that bad, you just have to get use to it like any other bike. So my advice is that if you have the loot to by another reliable bike, then go for it. If not, stunt the R1, and buy a new bike down the road.

Oh yea, if ya gonna stunt the 1, then take off all those pretty aftermarket parts, save yourself some money.

:D

I'd be concerned with the subframe being welded to the frame instead of bolted on like the most other sportbikes (CBRs,GSXR's).

If you dump it and the subframe gets tweaked bad, she's totalled.

Hey, my bike use to look like that, now it looks like, well lets just say it has alot of character:D The R1 is the least stable out of all the new models, but its nothing you can't get use to. Stunt that ****, you only live once.

Looking at yours made me wash mine for the first time in a couple months. Took me 20 minuets to get all the tire off the tail. I dont know, sometimes I wish I would have bought a beater. But now even a little nasty she still gets the looks. Not stable as any of the others I've rode on one wheel as the others have said and I think that adds to the fun of it. Its great when you out wheelie someone on an RR or Gixxer. All in all I say stunt the **** out of her.

You're thinking of Gary from CK Extreme...

Anyways, I've never stunted an R1, but I've heard from all the guys that I ride with that they are not good at all for stunting. Especially cuz of the subframe.

On another note... Why is your exhaust on the wrong side?

Nags,
You are right about the mix up... My bad Jimmy! I saw those pics a while back with Laura and I thought it was Jimmy for some reason?!?!?! I thought he had the GSXR and the R1...

Sorry Jimmy, and props to Gary! Sweet pics!

Also, the exhaust is on both sides Nags! It was a limited production "race" exhaust that Yamaha made for the 98-99 R1! You don't see many of them so that is why I liked it! I got it, both carbon fenders for only $500! Sweet deal, but if you mess it up you cannot fix it! I fit it to the 2001 without too much mods, but it could be a bit higher if you ask me. Never the less...pretty cool!

I am getting mixed reactions from people on stunting it... the subframe is a valid concern!

Thanks for all the input!

i think the main issue you should worry about as mentioned before, is that the sub is welded to the frame, looping it or overbraking on a stoppie would be disastrous to that subframe if the bike landed on it..and its not exactly parts friendly either, finding parts for an R1 at reasonable prices when you wipe would be a task on its own.. last i looked, a used tank on ebay went for +/- $200..

keep it pretty bro.. obviously youve dedicated alot of time to make it "special" and stand out, dont destroy it, buy a used bike and tear it a new ***-@$*%..

RR's seem to be the bike of choice cause the parts are abundant and relatively cheap... not because the bike itself has anything differant or unique, its which bike anyone gets the feel for

good luck man

Darius....for ex:

Had an R1, crashed it

Bought a 02 R1, then

Bought a 929 to stunt the sh*t out of it.

Stunt = Honda/Suzuki

R1 =

You know what I mean

I think you should stunn it, take off the exhaust and run a stock one chopped in half, take off the rear carbon fender too, dont want to pop a tire with with a $150 fender, the front one should be fine, even in a good wreck it doesnt usually get hurt, buy all the frame sliders you can get, bars, swingarm, frame, clutch saver is most important without it the first hard drop on the left side and your leakin oil. Runs lots of zip ties around the mirror holes. R1's a good stunt bike, the drawbacks from some bikes are, tank doesnt dent in very far and also if it's not dented it's angled which isnt as easy to stand on, and since the front fairing isnt as big it doesnt offer much support when doing feet over stoppies but it works, and if you drill extra holes thru your windscreen securing it better to the upper that makes it way better. The main parts I break from small crashes are pegs and brackets, worse crashes bust you headlight and bend the bracket. And the biggest draw back is the fact it wont stay running in a 12. If you plan on doin 12's sell the R1.
