carbon fiber clear coat peel

just took off my shift-tech carbon fiber front fender as the clear coat has begun to peel...Did some wet sanding today with 1000 grit sand paper and threw two coats of clear on top of it...tomorrow i will wet sand it again with 1500 throw another coat of clear on wet-sand with 2000 and buff her out and see how it goes. I will upload some pics of the finish product for those who are interested.

Re: carbon fiber clear coat peel

Yeah I have seen this with a few carbon Products would like to know why that is. The fender is fairly new...They shouldnt put such a shity clear coat on such an expensive item...o well still love carbon fiber! Just not the shity clear coats that usually goes with it. I'll have the finished product up soon !

yeah, why can you tell lol I didn't want to bother with a gun on such a small piece. I used a clear my friend recommended to me that he used to repaint a section of his fairing that came out and is holding up very well.

i probably should have labeled my attached images better...i posted pictures of before i sanded it..than after i wet-sanded with 1000 grit and spayed 2 coats of clear over it as i stated in my original post...but i forgot to take pictures of what it looked like after the 1000 grit sand before i sprayed the clear thanks for the info tho. Tomorrow ill do the 1500 grit shoot another coat of clear..sand with 2000 and than buff

Re: carbon fiber clear coat peel

most carbon fiber is not clear coated, its just the bare resin. I'm sure its not UV stable and thats why it chalks up.

that's what I was gonna say but wasen't sure..

I'm pretty sure you could have just slapped some more resin on there, and sanded it if you really wanted

on a side note this is stunt life, why are you worried about wet sanding to 2000gritt and polishing?

I believe the piece from shift tech was clear coated from the amount of wet sanding that needed to be done and the resign...I would have to agree I'm sure it had little to NO UV protection whether it was clear coated or not. It doesn't make much sense to me to have no UV protection on a product that will be exposed to the sun..

To answer your question i sprayed it with a clear that is resistant to sunlight, ran/moisture and temperature changes so the same problem doesn't occur again.... as far as me using 2000 grit paper and polishing i want a good finish man! lol

Re: carbon fiber clear coat peel

Dont mess around with all that bs of paint then sand then paint and sand again. Keep coating it with nice wet coats of clear then sand it with 2000 grit and buff it. If your coats of clear are nice and smooth and you don't have any dry spots or orange peel then don't even mess with wet sanding it.

I just got done repainting my car, with a gun of course, 3 coats of clear then wet sanded with 2000 grit and buffed, you can use it as a mirror if you wanted to

+1 I found out the hard way to just keep laying clear down without sanding

I'd paint **** and the paint peeled off with the type!!!! I had to start over wasn't happy bout that

If you sand to fine and lay down anthor coat the paint has nothing to grab on to and it will peel/flake off 600 grit should be the finest till ur buffing the clear w/ 2000 & wax
