Clutch basket install?

Re: Clutch basket install?
are you taking out the clutch plates and discs? or is it just a whole basket swap? If its a basket swap its really easy. put it in the same way it came out. but if your taking all the plates and **** out just count how many and in what order you took them out in. and the springs need to be torqued to spec or it **** it up.....honestly both pretty easy man.

Re: Clutch basket install?
itll be a pain in the *** if you dont have the impact

Re: Clutch basket install?
It can be done with a breaker bar if you use the transmission and a rod through the rear wheel to hold it. Not sure if that would cause any damage but an impact is definitely the way to get it off.

Re: Clutch basket install?
just remember the basket only seats at one point, so keep turning it till it seats all the way in. its easy to think its seated and put it together only to have no clutch engagement.

Re: Clutch basket install?
and remember not to buzz it back on with the impact gun, only for taking it off. whether you zap it real quick or not you have no way of knowing how much torque it is applying. this is the most common mistake made by tire shops.

Re: Clutch basket install?
Why are you replacing the basket? that has nothing to do with a slipping clutch. IF it does need to be replaced, use an impact to take the center nut off, be sure to inspect and see if there is a lock washer behind the nut that has the tabs folded up around the nut, those need to be gently bent back so the nut can spin. to reinstall the basket, take an OLD metal clutch disc from the clutch and weld a piece of steel bar to it, rebar, flat or round bar, long bolt...etc... as wide as will fit between the tines in the basket. this is a home made clutch basket holder for re-tightening the basket. USE A TORQUE WRENCH, not an impact! and tighten to the proper spec. And yes, carefully align the basket on the shaft so that it is properly seated all the way in.

Re: Clutch basket install?
i get that, but i found a like new basket with all internals, for 50 bucks. So your saying theres a seperate issue OUTSIDE the basket? Thought the basket holds the plates.

Re: Clutch basket install?
Clutch plates are like tires..... you replace the tires but hardly ever need to replace the rims. get it?
A clutch basket doesn't need to be replaced unless its broken or unless it has deep groves in the tines of the basket from the fiber plates smashing into the sides. This is more common on dirt bikes and ATV's where there are lots of high RPM clutch dumps. Replace the fiber discs, metal discs, springs and cover gasket. OEM clutch unless you are drag racing or road racing.
inspect the pressure plate and center hub where the fibers make contact. If you see scoring or random wear marks like a shiny area and then a dull area and then shiny again, that part is most likely warped and you should replace it. If not, you will wear out the clutch fast.

Re: Clutch basket install?
Like new? Just because someone tells you its LIKE NEW doesnt mean it is. I've seen clutches on street bikes go bad after 1000 miles because people dont know how to ride. The parts came out of the bike and looked BRAND NEW!!! but they were garbage. You have to know what to look for and what questions to ask when buying used parts of this nature, you could be throwing your money away. post pictures of this 50 dollar basket.

Re: Clutch basket install?
got it, im pretty sure the basket has the internals with it, ie meaning the plates. either way the bike has 36k so replacing it would be a peace of mind thing.

Re: Clutch basket install?
those pictures dont show me much other than it looks like a GSXR clutch 06+?
I wouldnt replace your basket unless it shows signs of wear. You could be trading it for one in worse condition. and the least the guy could have done was clean the parts and NICELY display them on a clean paper towel.
