Appendix of the fuel

ok so my petcock (yea haha funny word) is seeping a little gas because a gasket isnt lining up right because this spring inside of the petcock is angleing it just a little off.....anyway the spring isnt attached to anything and doesnt look like it does anything......maybe acts like a lock washer? but the screws already have lock washers so im not sure thats it......does anyone with a carbed bike know what im talking about or even know if that spring does anything????????? if i take it off the gasket will line up and im 90% sure it wont seep but just wondering if there are any ill effects form removing it.......thanks stuntlifers!!!!
