Re: welding a gas tank

fill it w water....drain it out then use carb cleaner and a lighter to ignite any remaing fumes...after this is done the fumes are purged and the ank can be safely welded w/o any other funky set up:twocents

Beardo does dish soap count as a funky setup?....or running your car exhaust through the tank?.....im thinken i would run my bike exhaust through the tank but a car?.....thats jus wrong!

either one wil get an explosion going..lol poor kruss...thats not realy funny.... make sure you have the cap off and the pump out of the tank all holes open, run the watter through it, drain it out....spray some carb cleaner from the hole in tank out on to the ground and about 10 feet away like a fuse then light it up and whatch the purging happen before you very eyes..... and yes i would consider all those other suggestions as "funky"

OH MAN! he came over last night and looked like fire marshal bill!!
his hands had big ole huge bubbles on them! it was kina sad..gave him some meds i had...gotta take care of the fam.

ok so the tank will rust if i weld it what can i use to prevent that im only asking this all cuz i have 2 tanks smashed and riped on top

If you do weld it, you can get a product at most any mc shop called KREEME gas tank sealer and it will seal the tank and keep it from rusting.
Its kinda a pain your first time but if you do it right and follow the directions it works good.
I've used this at least 20-25 times on old vintage tanks that were rusted and also on some freshly welded tanks and like i said, if you do it right ...
it works good.

100 times? dang, you weld alot of tanks.
I worked at a custom shop for years and have done a ton of chopper tanks and also modified stock chevy gas tanks when doing stock floor body drops. I haven't moved the cap on a sportbike yet but it is the same concept.
