back injuries/spine injuries

How many of you guys and chicks have injured or broken your spine?

This is very early safety product research, not even at the "and development" stage, but I'd like to hear about your injuries, and how they happened, and feel free to offer opinions or ideas if you think there really is anything product wise that can reduce compression on the spine while riding stunts/crashing.

mostly just want to hear what degree of compression/flexion you had going, and what happened.

For me, I've got eight screws, one plate, two bone graft surgeries, 3 months apart. The plate went on in 04, and bugs me more now than it did then. I don't recommend titanium plating on the spine for people who are going to go out there and still ride, it seems like it transfers compression too hard, and sets me up for worse injuries.

then again, maybe I'd be in a chair typing this with my face if the plate weren't there. it's def bugging me, and I'd like to ride again, but have to be careful about compression injuries. because I'm completely fucked now, extrustion at t8/9

ouch!

I am healing up too from a loop out... i just got lucky and broke a rib, and brused a lung... my back hurts pretty bad too, and its been a week, since the ambulance ride to the hospital...

I should have been wearing my back protector.. I could be on wheels for life.... I turned right at the right tie and the round bar hit my ribs...

how did yours happen?

never broken any but blew out 2 discs last year, pretty sure theres nothing thatll stop **** like that from happening. motorcycle riding doesnt exactly encourage the best posture.

Icon field armor saved my life. No joke. I had gotten into an accident last year where i was run off of the road. I had hit a curb going 35 to 40 went over the bars about 15 or so feet into a no parking sign back first, my body wrapped around it and my feet had almost touched the back of my head from what was said. I walked away uninjured. The field armor vest had compressed so much it had a rivet pop out of it and it still has the lines in it from the sign that i had hit and bent.

Damn. You guys are tougher than I am. I'd still be in the road cryin. haha

I've had multiple injuries, and my disks are falling apart. Fell down some old red brick stairs holding my baby. (who is ten now) she didn't hit the ground, but I nailed it every time. picked a dirt bike off my son after my first surgery in 04 and blew out a disk.

got rear ended on the freeway by a car that then got totalled into the back of my car (07), got beat up by a cop (08), got picked up and shook by my giant husband (06), slid off the seat during my first real sitdown wheelie (07) and landed right on my ***. hurt my tailbone all the way up to my neck. I got up and pushed it off the bar like, "I'm fine" but damn that hurt like there was a fire truck parked on my buttcrack.

the last one was a rough boat ride (09). and I'm out. I can feel the plate all the time now, and that extruded disk could cause a lot of trouble for me if I'm not still. but I can't be still.

My metabolic rate is naturally very high.

Re: back injuries/spine injuries

so basically I'm trying to invent like...bubble wrap for my spine, and am willing to share if I come up with anything. got a little bit of help, in that I've met some people who make protective gear and hospital supply type stuff. a lot of products are started out using molded plastic which is apparently easy to work with and make prototypes.

so far I've got nothing in the way of a solid idea to protect my fucked up spine.
