Setting up a 954 - advice please!

what advice would you guys have for me, if i have an '02 954 and am determined to set it up for the lot. I was given the bike, in completely stock form, from a friend who can no longer ride for personal reasons. He always dreamed of seeing this bike rock slow stuff in the lot and before he was able to convert it to a lot bike, he fell ill...I have always ridden 600s and never got very technical on any of them as far as slow stuff goes (i was just learning rear break control on idle when i sold my 636)...I would sell the bike in any other circumstances for an F4i or another 636, but since it was a gift, i feel like the only right thing to do would be to keep it and ride it out. Before i start throwing money at it, i would like to get some expert advice on tried and true 954 set-ups. I searched and found nothing very helpful Thanks guys - HUBB

Re: Setting up a 954 - advice please!

gear it lightly, +10 max (i remeber seeing vids of darius on his 929(954 motor) and that thang had some serious snap to it)

put some clip ons(vortex 0degree or my personal cheap fav. stock 636 switched and fliped)
and a damper on it.

do not use an FI cage. they did not work well on that bike...look into sick innovations

also i am no pro at the '54 so others will chime in on this but there is an exhaust valve that needs addressing

other than that, its ready to go stock

I would take all the plastics off so it doesn't get dirty.

Yup^^^^ elim. The valve in the exhaust. You can pick these up on e-bay for 75 bucks, and yup^^^^ only +10 max (they really do have alot of tourque already) and an si cage is the best. And a nice handbreak and clipons will be nice. I would not dent the tank. Buy one that is already dented. And keep all your stock parts so if you ever want to go back to stock. And with it being a gift just keep it as respect to that person.

Re: Setting up a 954 - advice please!

sickinnovations cage worked great on my 954, realy took alot of abuse.
I ran -1/+5 but I would suggest -1/+8 for slow stuff
GPR steering damper helped alot on this bike cause it´s a tank slapping monster, especially if you run a Michelin Pilot Power up front.
636 clip ons give a good feeling!
