ok, saturday i crashed a 12 pretty hard. The engine cage ripped off, thus cracking my frame and pulling my threads out of my engine. I have a video but for some reason when i put it on the computer, i can't convert it from .avi to mpg. it's 12 megs so i'm going to post it but it'll be huge. If anyone can convert it please do so and let me know so i can have it. I've tried 8 converters and they all mess it up.

also, how do i fix the threads on my motor mount? I was thinking about using a longer bolt and drilling the mount through and putting a nut on the back. Thanks for the help.

here's the video, like i said it's 12 megs cause it's avi. when i try to convert to .mpg it loses my sound or makes it blurry. if you can convert it i'd appreciate it.

i'm thinking about using a lower grade bolt so the bolt snaps nad doesn't destroy my mounts. Replacing bolts and even engine cases seems cheaper than frame and motor mounts.

 

true that on the lower quality bolts. My crash cage has just regular bolts. I crashed hard sunday. Sure it bent all the bolts & the cage looks like spagetti - but a sledge hammer & some new bolts & im back in action. My boy did grade 8 motor mount bolts on his cage. Riped the "ear" of the frame way back that held the motor. Facked it up pretty good.

i had the same thought about those cages, i built my own with lesser grade bolts from the home depot, i figured using 1/4 inch steel tubing for sliders was good in theory but the aluminum is now the weak spot, i stripped out one of my boys on install and replaced it with a 12mm bolt just drilled out the frame hole larger and retapped the whole, held up mint, if its broken i have seen guys reweld and retap those mount holes. thanks for confirming my fears i will use these bolts on all my boys stuff now,..............................maybe somone should write to frestyle injenuity and tell them to start shopping at the depot for their hardware

 

use weak bolts because chances are when you crash something is going to give out and replacing 5$ worth of bolts each time is much better my bike went down 6 times or so and just the last time my engine muont broke off the case time to learn how to aluminum weld

What about drilling a hole through the length of the bolt? The bolt will be plenty strong just sitting there but in actiaon the bolt will be about as strong as a toothpick. Just enough to save the bike but bust the bolt.

 

ya, i got to looking today...my bike is ****ed. i have a 10" crack down the side of my frame and my frame motor mount is snapped along with stripped motor mount.

I think a lesser grade bolt would work better so it snaps off instead of the thing killing my bike like i did. I have to go to my uncle's shop now and get my frame welded back together.

I thought of either doing the lesser grade bolt or putting back plastic sliders on it so when it hits they take the shock tehn break off and the plastic is the weak point, not my frame.

and in that video, i let the clutch out and i was damn near stopped. I was basically just barely rolling when i clutched it up. I might have been around 5 mph when i hit but then it took off after i let go. The main reason it had a bad crash is because the bike landed strait on the side, it didn't land on the front wheel then fall over. from a 12 to directly on the side puts a lot of force on one small slider.

also, i got the file smaller but it's a divX form. Most of you should have that codec if you have updated programs but i'm leaving both links up. here is the newest one that's 2 meg:

Well I went with the lower grade bolts and my engine mounts were still tweaked after my 12 crash....
I think alot of has to do with luck on how the bike decides to fall.
For the most part though the cage has really helped.

same thing happend here, my friends and i all bought f.i. cages and the first week my friend and i were sliding 12's and both lost it one time and cracked our motor mounts right off. after that, everyone took off thier cages. it's kinda hard trying to resale your bike with a chunk of aluminum welded on your motor.

 

well nags, i would put less grade bolts in it. I'm going to use grade 2 bolts so they snap off and i can just fix that.

and yes, the cage is great, just has some drawbacks which i hope to fix with a weaker bolt.

 

That was a sweet crash. I'd work on slowin it down a little before you go for the tail light.

btw-For future reference, lift with your legs, not your back.

 

how fast were you going there? it seems to me that an any crash, something has got to give. there is just no way around it. Either the cage takes the impact, flexes a little and protects the motor, or the bolt breaks, or in your case, the frame breaks.

Your crash looks a little violent on the bike, just the way that it slingshotted over and landed directly on the cage. Seems to me that if you got away with just a crack in the frame and some stripped threads, you got lucky. If it hit that hard with the cage and did the damage it did, just think of what it would have been like without the cage.

You may have been left without a motor. Then again you may not, but odds aren't in your favor in crashes. So you have to spend a little time getting the frame welded at your uncle's shop. Is that not better than finding a new motor, finding the money for it, the spending the time to swap it all out? Just a thought.

Not trying to start anything. Just stating my opinion is all. I love my Freestyle Ingenuity cage and won't ride my bike without it. I use grade 10 bolts in my cage and havent had a problem yet. Again, this is just my 2 cents, do with it what you will. Hope everything goes ok with you getting your bike back togther.

 

Who are you going to sell a stunted bike to? ride it, till its dead. Put your cage back on.
A little welding is ok, binders bike would of been even more f*cked if he didn't have the cage on.
