speedo reading on gs vs. sprocket change--help plz
Well, the doctor says I need to replace my chain and sprockets. Im not a pro, but just based on looks I would say he is right. Since the sprockets need to be replaced, I would like to change it up a bit. On the gs forums, many people have had DRASTIC results using a 14t front (stock is 16t). So, I would like to do this.
Question 1: if I go down two teeth in the front, need I change the rear? can i just replace it with an oem sprocket or does it need to balance out or anything like that? stock rear is 46t I beleive.
Question 2: Need the chain be replaced with one of a different size? Should the smaller front sprocket require a shorter chain? Stock is 110 links, would going with a 108 be beneficial?
Question 3: Will this alter the speedometer reading? If you are not familiar with gs's, the speedo feeds off the front wheel. I dont know if this is different from most other bikes, but I have heard of people having speedo trouble with different sprockets. In my case, having the speedo driven from the front wheel, I would assume that changing anything in the driveline (gearing, rear tire, etc) could not have an effect on speedometer calibration. Some people on the gs forums argued the opposite though, just wanted to see what ya'll thought.
Any and all help is appreciated

Re: speedo reading on gs vs. sprocket change--help plz
edit: doubt you will need a healer
you will need a new chain never change sprockets without a new chain unlss the mileage has been really low
everytime you drop a tooth up front its like going up 2-3 in the rear

plus going down in the front wears down the chain faster then going up in the rear, the chain has to make a tighter turn around the smaller sprocket

i was recommended an RK 520 chain, and told that it would be able to handle the extra strain. i needed a new chain anyway. thoughts on whether this chain will be able to hang?

I'd go down 1 up 12 but thats me. Lol really tho prolly down 1 up 5 520 conversion. Many ppl knock 520's but ive had them on my 1k's, 954, f4i etc never a problem. Make sure its a o-ring or x-ring tho. Good luck
