Look at these two pix. One of a 2005 and the other of a 2006 subframe. just below the seat latch, the crossmember is what you need to focus on. the 2005 has a straight one and the 2006 has a arch-like crossmember. that arch-like crossmember is what keeps my sub from snapping. I'm not saying that the subframe is a strong as the SI sub but I'm just saying the 2006 is a lot better and if you're careful, you may not need to spend $400 on an SI.

Re: SI steel subframe for 05 636

that arched section on my sub cracked along with the snapped square tube there by it. I wouldn't count on it lasting very long.

Re: SI steel subframe for 05 636

I built a brace for my sub today and i'll post pics of it tomorrow-basically bolts up to my SI round bar and extends all the way down to the square hollow section. This is a MAJOR reinforcement...pics soon....

Re: SI steel subframe for 05 636

I believe you can reinformance on your own or if you know anyone does good welding job for probably at least 100 and save 300 in your pocket. I would go someone who does good weld job than pay 400 for it. that it just me

Re: SI steel subframe for 05 636

My brother rides an 04 R6 and has the same subframe as me....break way too easy. After breaking 3 stock subframes from ebay before SI started building them he contacted a local certified welder and made one custom, $110. He said it was easy to build and it has stayed strong. The welder said if it breaks or bends he will fix it for free for as long as he owns the bike.

Re: SI steel subframe for 05 636

Finished it today. I call this the "Armenian Subframe Cage" LOL And yes my TIG welds are ugly but they're damn strong and you can't see it under the tail anyways:

There is zero flex in my tail now-WAY better than the stock flimsy junk and this cost me about 14 dollars in steel to build.
