Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008
Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008. Well if you don't know what this means let me tell you. On Feb. 10, 2009 Honda and other manufacturers can no longer sell 50,70,80, and 90 cc bikes and atv's geared toward kids. This is due to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 which states that lead in paint over 600ppm (parts per million) and lead in substrate material over 600ppm. Members of the Motorcycle Industry Council and Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, which face the same issues as Honda, are actively working to exempt the alloy parts for small motorcycles and ATVs from the terms of the Act. The lead embedded in the alloys used in these products is not transferred through typical use of these products. Our shared belief is that Congress never intended the lead content provisions of the Act, which originally were aimed at toys that can be mouthed by children, to be applicable to small ATVs and motorcycles. So as of Feb. 10, 2009 you can't even sell parts, new units, or get parts for them anymore. Something has to be done to stop this nonsense!

We have to take all these units off the floor and send them back. No parts are to be sold and no bikes are to displayed on the floor! We all have to write our local congress person and try to stop this from happening! I think something will be resolved. When I don't know! Hopefully sooner than later! Well at least Honda 50's unbreakable!

We run Lawrenceburg Motorcycle Speedway and the 50 class is the biggest class. It also has some of the best racing. Those kids beat the crap out of these bikes and now we can't even sell parts to fix them. If this does stick it will cause major problems for motocross, supercross, flattrack, and other forms of motorcycle racing. This is a bunch of bullshit!

Alot of people do not know about this. Me being a parts manager I look at it like this. If somebody comes in next Wednesday and needs parts for a 50,70,or 80. I have to tell them there unit is worthless and I can not sell them parts due to the new goverment regulations. I am going to get my *** chewed daily. This goes for all 50,70, and 80 parts includeing BBR, Fast Fiddys, and many other after market parts suppliers.

That is the thing. We can sell 2009 units until Wednesday. Then we can not. So if you buy a 2009 unit Tuesday and you break a lever or something on Wednesday and come back in for parts I have to tell them I can not sell them the parts on a bike they just purchased the day before. WTF!

Its a paint problem
lead in the paint
tehy'll simply paint them in another type of paint, and they'll be right back on the showroom floor right?
what I'm getting from the post, is there is too much lead in a product made for children
which IMO on a dirt bike is a little retarded.. That should be compared to a kid drinking the gasoline, eating grease, or drinking oil.
Obviously you don't eat chips of paint off your dirt bike, they are covered in dirt and oil! lol

Re: Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008
That is not entirely true. There is lead in the steel. There is no lead in the paint that they use to paint the frames. Yeah since they are sold for kids they do not pass under the new guide lines. Now if they where sold for kids above 13 then we could still sell them, but the manufacturers are not going to use that loop hole!

wow complete bullshit. Since Pro taper, 50 stunt and other companys make parts for 50's 70's and other kids bikes will they also not be able to sell parts?
