Arizona's unemployment rate rose half a percentage point to 5.6 percent in August, but the number of employed remained level, the Arizona Department of Commerce reported today.
The state's unemployment rate remains under the national level of 6.1 percent.
Jobs in the state grew by 34,000 from July to August mostly because of back-to-school hires, but the total number stayed 50,700 or 1.9 percent below a year earlier.
Arizona now has had six consecutive months of over-the-year job losses.
"Have we reached the bottom? I would certainly hope that we are going to reach it soon but based on those numbers it looks like we're still seeing a bit of a decline continuing although it seems to be slowing," said Dennis Doby, senior director of research administration.
Retail jobs in the state fell by 2,400 in August compared to July, suggesting that back-to-school sales weren't that profitable, Doby said. Retail jobs are down 2.1 percent from a year earlier.
Most of the job losses over the past year have been in construction, which lost 16 percent of its jobs over the past year. It lost another 2,100 jobs in August, putting it 37,200 jobs below a year earlier.
Other areas showing declines from a year earlier were manufacturing, down 2.3 percent; information technology and telecommunications, down 5.4 percent; financial activities, down 2.4 percent; business and professional services, down 2.4 percent and leisure and hospitality, down 0.1 percent.
The largest over-the-year job growths were in natural resources and mining, up 8.5 percent; health and private education, up 3.4 percent and government and public education, up 1.5 percent.
