slipped/ruptured disk

anyone ever have one? i havent gotten the final confirmation yet from my mri but all signs point to that being my problem. my left army shoulder area has been in intense pain and i got numbness in my elbo and 2 fingers and my arm is very weak. the doc put me on steroids and some pain meds im wondering how long this will take to stop. i just started the meds on tuesday and have been having symptoms since like a few weeks ago that go real bad so that i had to to the ER. anybody ever have this problem, how did you heal up, how much time, anything the helped you?

Re: slipped/ruptured disk

when i broke my back two of the vertebrae crushed one of my disk causing it to rupture and press against my spinal cord.... it causes electric shock pains, and numbness, and sometimes muscle weakness.

Re: slipped/ruptured disk

I handle workmans comp claims like this all the time. It can give you trouble for the rest of your life for some people but others seem to come out fine.

I suggest going to a really good chiropractor that does xrays first and uses his hands to manipulate your spine instead of tools.

It takes a little time and they want to see you regularly for a few weeks but trust me I've been through 2 slipped disk and the chiro got me beack in business.

The doctor only gave me steroids and muscles relaxes. These only fix the symptoms. the chiro fixes the problem if you follow through.

I was going 3 times a week at first but now I go once every 2 months and by then I want to go anyway just for the electric message.

i dont think thats true. every thing that ive read from countless specialists suggests that surgery is rarely needed unless the situation is very severe and unresponsive to medication and PT

I think thats my problem. I have to get a few steroid shots in my back each year to cope. No health insurance so i'm fucked regardless, hence steroid shots

Not to crash your party but if it is in fact a ruptured disc the chiro cant fix that. If he is a good chiro he will know as soon as he evaluates you.

I know a guy that had outpatient surgery on a ruptured disc and was out of work for 2 days and hasn't missed since. The cut on his back was small enough to cover with a band-aid.
ANother guy that had the same thing has had 2 of the same surgeries and been out of work for nearly 2 years now and is still drawing a check.
I think it has a little bit to do with drive to get better and not giving up and sittin on your ***. Ths guy looks like he ate the man he use to be.

Good luck to you that its just slipped.
As dumb as the exercises seem that the chiro may want you to do just do it anyway. You would have to go through worse if you had PT after a surgery anyway.

Well thats good. I just know of 2 guys I work with who both had to have sugery, but I don't know the extent of the injury. All I know is one of them had such a problem that he couldn't even walk right because his whole leg was numb.

Don't get too worried about it just yet, that seems to be pretty common among riders. Of course if it gets to bad you could be in the same boat as sdfkillz.

I think it comes form the weight of the helmet and slamming down when trying to learn circles.

I got what the chiro called "straight neck" but now I'm all curvey agian. I even have a contoured pillow that I can't stand to sleep without

my problem is that when it started hurting i didnt stop riding. i would ride my *** off and then take a day or 2 off so i could deal with it enough to ride on and after like 2 weeks or so of that i must have really fucked it up. i think i had a tear in the lining that was causing the initial pain and then i aggrivated it enough where it ruptured out and made the pain real ****** major and caused the numbness/weakness. im too ****** stubborn to let my minor injuries heal and make them major. take it easy and go see a doc.

Sorry bro my wife tells me the same thing all the time.

I only asnwered first to slipped disc & couldn't be one sided I had to come back & give out the facts I know on both.

If you are up and walking around and doing things with just pain then I doubt you have a ruptured disc, probably just slipped.

With it ruptured you wouldn't get out of bed hardly so....

I hope that makes you feel better

Good luck!

i was under the impression that ruptured and slipped were the same thing? but i was in real bad shape last weekend hurt to just be alive, after i took some muscle relaxers and lost some of the tension it got alot better, now its manageable pain im not taking any pain meds, just the steroids.

Re: slipped/ruptured disk

saw something about surgery.. my dad has had back problems all his life after he crashed his motorcycle and broke his back in 2 places.. he decided to get a spinal fusion 4 months ago because the pain was getting intolerable and after fully recovering he still has intense back pains.. he said it made the pain more manageable but it still hurts

Slipped disc= disc is out of place between your vertibrae. It usually pushes against the nerves in your spine and that's where the pain comes from. The steroids help the nerves repair themselves and reduce swelling/inflamation. But the disc will continue to be out of place and continue to cause more problems like a domino effect. The changes in posture to cope with the slipped disc can effect everyhting even down to your feet and sinus. The sooner you get this thing back into place with a chiro the better. Dotors try exercises to get it back but that usually never prmanently fixes it. Doctors will eventually cut the portion of the disc that rubs against your nerves to cut out the pain but you still have a spine out of alignment.

Ruptured disc= think of the disc as a really stiff breast implant. It has a stiff shell and is cushioned by fluid on the inside. It's a shock absorber /cushion for your spine.
This thing can bust just collapse. This can me mended but most likely not repaired without surgery. Without the cushion you always will have pain.

Fused spines are when they remove the disc alltogether and fuse the vertibrae together eliminating the flex in your spine in that area so it can't rub the nerves any more. Helps the pain but causes problems in other areas of the spine later on

Like I said before a chiro will know on his first evaluation if its ruptured or just slipped. They will not touch a ruptured disc that I know of.
