I second the idea of using your face.

And don't use a deadblow it stretches the metal too fast if your not used to it.

I predict you learn circle wheelies by July 2097.

Re: Advice for denting?

I dont understand why people beat the living **** out of their tank and make it like a full smash. I like to make a D shape so the front acts like a brake to keep me on the bike if it slams down, or for doing front wheelie manuivers. Smashing the front of the tank is just overkill and it just means chances are your going to mousetrap a spreader all that much faster and you probably don't know what a highchair nose wheelie is.

I think flat dents have a much better lip which feels much nicer for tank tricks to me. And if you're doing acros you have a much better surface to land on. But yea, it sucks for mouse trapping. I set down a 50/50 o pretty calmly with my new dent and ripped my fender right off.

Re: Advice for denting?

Here is my minty dent and somehow managed to find matching blue grip tape. I think i'd rather trade worse feel for christ stand then picking my teeth out of the front fender.

Re: Advice for denting?

My tank after about 30 minutes with a rubber mallet (I don't have a dead blow hammer, so I grabbed what I had)
Beat my tank soo long my arm was sore, and I had to switch arms...

Then I paid a friend money to braze 3 holes shut that I put in it

Then a bunch of bondo, and HAND SANDING

And I came up with this.. I love it.. Holds my *** and legs perfect..
Before I beat it in this deep, I couldn't clutch up spreaders/hc's AND cover the brake

Oh ya, and thats hc's and spreaders with no grip tape lol.. Haven't got any yet

edit: hmmmm.... the color AND pictures make it soo the tank doesn't look like its dented that far.. Trust me, its dented about as far as I can..
The gas cap opening is pressing against the bottom, and it takes FOREVER to fill with gas lol..
Not to mention, the tank dent goes way back, and feels weird when riding the bike normaly (my ***** damn near hang over the lip of the tank lol)

Re: Advice for denting?

LOL you dont have to beat your tank long man its a 5 minute job at max. Just grab a felt marker, Mark out where you want your dent. Use a rubber hammer to outline the outside line with small dents, then put a rag on your tank grab a cinder block and hit a few times till you get it deep enough. It will follow outside line and make a perfect shape in next to no time.

I was just barely hitting mine, trying to make it the 'perfect' dent before bondo

My old dent, was shitty. you could physically see the dents where the hammer hit..
This time I did my best to make it a nice smooth dent.. It was definitely WAY better then my old dent, just took forever

I shoulda took a picture before I bondoed it.. It was pretty damn smooth for no bondo yet

My old dent, as well as my friends current dent, are a joke

Re: Advice for denting?

On my next tank dent ill take pics of the whole prosses which will be sometime in the next week. The cinder block serisously makes a PERFECT shape, no creases it follows the outter edge perfect no nothing needed because it makes it perfectly flat. Follow it up with a ballpein hammer for the few spots that may need it and you wont need bondo at all. Ive done two tanks like this now and i swear its the best way.

Mine was already creased though, and had 2 leaks

When I first dented my tank, I had NO idea what I was doing.. It was back before I could even do a spreader or high chair

I just recently decided to finally fix the 2 leaks I had, and before I fixed them, I decided to BEAT THE **** out of my tank to get it as deep as I could, THEN fixed it :YEAH

btw your pic is dead for me

Re: Advice for denting?

stand up on it, and stomp it out. that will get you the cleanest start, and your paint will still be coo... it also helps keep creases down, then rubber mallet the contour, or prefection. they you should be coo, dent doesnt need to be that deep either.
