Re: Safe to take the exhaust off?

Ive always heard it will burn valves no back pressure and the cool air gettin right back into the exhaust when you shut it down

im pretty sure the headers are long enough to keep this from happening, my .

Re: Safe to take the exhaust off?

With no muffler it creates no back pressure.....The compression of the motor is designed to run with that back pressure from the exhaust.....when you take it off it lessens the back pressure and when the exhaust valves are opening and closing the less pressure causes them to Lash.........Thats my understanding of it

Most aftermarket pipes are straight through

I ran my f4i for probably a total of 2000 miles with no exhaust...

And when it comes down too it, my friends f4i exhaust is PRETTY much headers only.. Don't know how you could flow much more then runnin a D&D pipe that is shorter then half its original length

edit: And ya it might cause some damage.. but so does rev limiter, and flipping your bike down the street..

I wouldn't run mine without and exhaust for more then a day any more, but I did run it for about a month or two at one point.. lol

it doesnt eliminate back pressure it just lessens it. i can go into deep detail, but while the motor is running, i would say that it is highly, highly unlikely that ambient air at any elevation is gonna make its way into the cylinder while the motor is running, based on the fact that each header tube is over 2' long (not to mention hot as ****) and air pressure at sea level is approximately 14.7psi (depending on weather conditions). in simpler terms, this means that even if the air pressure could overcome the exhaust pressure it would still be plenty hot by the time it reached the cylinders.

my homeboy had a can about 6" long welded directly to the header and never had a problem with his bike (he owned it for a year, maybe a little more).

by the way, any muffler will create back pressure even if it is straight through, because the baffles create turbulence in the exhaust causing back pressure.

in cali its a $10 fix it ticket, but chances are if you get stopped youre gonna get cited for more than your exhaust.

please do go on.... when you engine brake, exhaust starts to become a vaccuum... draws cold air into the exhaust(ever hear the loud pop noise, that is cold air expanding rapidly in the pipe) if this were to reach your valves this coud cause them to become brittle and crack... hot metal cold air ya'll know this... YES THIS WILL MOST LIKLEY NOT HAPPEN DO TO HEADER LENGTH... but dont throw it out the window... stupid *** thing to argue about.. back pressure increase lower rpm torque do to the cam design for emission and noise controll devices.

You haven't heard my D&D then.. I dont know wahts up with it, but it doesn't sound at all like any other D&D

and like I said, ran my bike for over 2,000 miles with straight headers, and was bangin rev limiter all the time.. 26k on my motor still kickin strong :YEAH
