Ok I got the **** done. The tank had this dent in it when I bought the bike.


I just dented it in , it broke in two spots but I think it turned out good considering the circumstances…



The only thing is the two breaks in the tank indicated in red can I fix this with JB weld ?


Once I bondo it and smooth it out should look good..

i got a minty tank(silver, red) on its way. got it cheap enough($150) but still i think i might need at least a six pack just to work up the courage to start swingin that hammer on it. lol!

It can be fixed, but I'd try and find a good welder that well weld it, be better. Is that your first dent?

 

Nice job man. You were real fortunate that the dint that was already on the tank didnt go down any more.. because it was at the perfect debth already !!

Bondo that **** and get to sanding..


Im currently in the process of sanding my frame to polish


Talk about only a cpl beers and half a hour.. im like 10 percent done and got 2 hours invested already

Has anyone tried solder? Which is better JB weld or Bondo?

 

I was lucky , but not that lucky. it was smashed a little to much that’s why it broke because I tried to make it even and had to pound it a little to much . This was my first dent on a f4i I did it to my GSXR but they don’t work as well as the Honda.

so what do you guys think about soldering it, or JB weld or bondo ? What works best ? i think if i put flux on the cracks and use solder , then put JB weld on it it should be good

 

Tank looks good, you can try to seal it that way, I don't see why not. Then bondo over the top of all that to smooth it up, and you should be fine

 

I'm not sure about solder, but I know in my case jb weld started to leak after a few months

I hear bondo is suppsoed to seal gas tank leaks, but I'm not sure.. ONly heard it from like 1p erson and even he wasen't soo sure about it one I said I was gonna bondo a gas tank

 

Have it WELDED, I Jb welded mine, and bondoed it and it started leaking.. now I have to have it welded anyway.. so just go have it welded to start with!!

 

Only reason I havn't welded mine, is I hear welding them burns the coating off the inside, causing them to rust from the inside from water vapors..

Does anyone know if thats true?

if the tank cracked the coating is gonna be cracked so its gonna start to rust regardless so you might as well weld it to keep the tank from leaking again

 

good lord... JB weld is crap.. and no bondo wont seal it.....

use quick steel... right next to the jb weld... make sure you push it down into the cracks

 

Weld it, it's sure fire as long as whoever does it does a good job. Sand it smooth and bondo for looks.

 

No mention of solder , come on has no one tired this before ?

 

im sure solder wouldnt work too well... its not realy going to bond with the metal...
