ground out engine illegal

Re: ground out engine illegal
Ok its not exaclty the same but you get the idea, there is a point in every material where that transfer stops and you cant read it anymore....It only goes so deep is all Im trying to get at.....I know Im right about that cause you cant tell me numbers are going to show up through 2" of material right?
Id just like to find out how deep they will show, maybe on some bikes theres not enough thickness so no matter how deep you go grinding its not enough to elimnate it completely. Now on motors there is usually a pretty think area where the numbers are, Id say at least 3/8"-1/2....
Now if someone could just tell me what kind of acid they use Id try this out and wed know for sure....Ive searched it and cant seem to find any info for this "acid testing"....Maybe theres a better name for it?

I think JohnnyP is running hot bikes haha
Hes swapping frames...restamping...has extra frames sitting around that he was going to throw away anyways....and overall seems overly into beating the system for this acid test hahah
I am a criminal investigations major in college currently and yes the acid test works, yes stock05 is right on the money about it, and no I'm not sure how deep down the grain is altered but I'm guna ask my teacher when I go back to class. We covered that acid test and learned a general overview of it. Once you join a department or get out into the field you take a specific course and become certified to specificly do the acid test. Also yes there is a technical name for it and I gotta search through my room and get the book and look it up for ya.
P.S. I'm just bustin your ***** JohnnyP

Re: ground out engine illegal
Think of it this way.....You have a pad of paper 100 sheets thick, and your write something with a pen. Sure it penatrates through a few sheets of paper, and you can see what was written....But it doesnt go through the whole ****** 100 sheets and through the back of the pad. Only tear off a few pages and you can still see what was written, but tear off enough sheets and that **** is as good as gone....
Keep in mind that this only applies to conventionally "stamped" frames. Take a look at newer R6/R1 frames and you'll see the #'s are not conventionally stamped, more like lazer etched or something (looks like little white dots). Those go through all the way.
As far as "hidden #'s"... thats bullshit. However it's not a bad idea for you to pop your tank and stamp some **** inside your own bike for ID purposes incase your **** gets jacked. I stamp my own tag in all my bikes and I etch all my expensive parts

Re: ground out engine illegal
lets just say that if you had a frame that the numbers were ground off of and then you restamped it wouldnt that again change the grain of the metal and make it impossible to get the numbers out with this so called acid. im really curious to find out how this stuff works

Re: ground out engine illegal
the only time it's going to be an issue is if your paperwork doesn't check out with the VIN on the bike, then they would probably impound it. they didn't even check the vin on my bike the multiple times we were pulled over for nothing.
and about getting out onto the force.....it would actually be someone in forensics that would test frames. it would have nothing to do with going to the academy and going out and being a cop. big mr. piggy driving around doesn't do that ****. if they were that educated do you think they would only be making 30k a year?

Re: ground out engine illegal
ya, you guys talk all hard about that **** but my #'s were all jacked up on my 929 when i was down there 3 years in a row due to switching motors and junk....the multiple times we got pulled over, guess how many of these "bad ***" florida cops did anythingabout it? hmm...probably zero considering there has never been anything against my record.

Re: ground out engine illegal
haha this is quite the discussion
i was thinking of that bike i sold with a ground out engine.... can you stamp new engine numbers on something like this; or will it just crack the case.
the reason its an issue is that the bike was a salvage title- if he gets a salvage inspection its gonna get checked.
i should have run to the bike dealer and grabbed an engine number off there.
